Reuse hydraulic hose?

Apparently most of you guys that read my post couldn't understand the last sentence.

For those that put a few dollars in your pocket above safety, go talk someone who has been the victim of oil injected under the skin, or someone who has has been injured in some other manner due to a hydraulic failure.

Nobody here has to accept or agree with my principles, I just don't care that much.

I was the one that posted that picture on TBN. That accident was caused by a hyd impact gun, and it did not say whether the hose was new or used. They did say that it burst at the crimped fitting.

With all due respects to all concerned, I can almost bet that if you own or work for a hyd shop, that the policy is to fix a customers product if at all possible, or sell him a new setup. I have been around to the shops in my area, and they will fix what the customer brings in with in reason. Most of them were a little vague on warranty though. They definitely did not want to write the warranty on paper.

Each individual that deals in safety has a responsibility to state the facts, and make the other person aware of them.

You can have those nasty accidents with bad crimps on new hoses just as easily as bad crimps on old hoses, Poor workmanship and poor judgement can cause "accidents" on just about any item or situation. I have been sprayed with hot hydraulic oil a lot of times, just as many with fairly new hoses as with old hoses. I have had many burst with not a sign of wear on the outside which is what most of mine do on my FEL. Maybe the hose is defective and all of them were made from the same reel but burst hydraulic hoses are a common occurence and injuries like the photos do happen but are a very rare occurence. You have the same type of injury with high pressure washers operating in the ultra high pressure range and they are just as bad. Most of them are not from burst hoses but the operator running the wand across his hand or foot or some other body part.

"You are the man Gary....good for you....whats the "record" in one day???"

If I got sprayed once I would go and get a better insurance, plus making sure not getting sprayed again....

Maybe you have to take a look at the safety procedures at work....:confused2:...

One can't just justify using "bad" hose, just because accidents can happen with "good" hose too...:confused2:

No one is suggesting the use of bad hose. Those of us who reuse hose have been quite clear on that so your point is just rhetorical.

The question is whether to always or almost always use new hose on CUT related hydraulics. If the answer is that you always need new hose "just in case" then that same pricinple might be applied to the entire tractor. Why not replace the entire tractor each time a hose leaks. Never know when the next hose on that used tractor is going to blow, right?

The reuse of good condition hoses is just a practical economic matter and we make similar judgments and beneficial compromises in all areas of life daily. Do you replace a car tire with a simple puncture or repair it?

I don't need a robot programed to say "replace it" when I go to a hydraulic shop. I need an experienced knowledgable mechanic who can help me assess condition and also understand the risks associated with my particular application. The final judgment is mine but I'd like to trust that the mechanic is not just giving me a knee jerk reaction.

I'll agree with all that with one exception. If I am making the hose and selling the parts & pieces, the decision to repair or replace AT MY LOCATION is mine, not yours. You can always disagree and go elsewhere.

IMO, posting this type of image without a caveat is not in good taste...I am not disturbed by the content but some folks that aren't expecting something like that might just lose their lunch...

I suggest using a link to images not everyone may not want to see with a warning about the content...
