The lift cylinder on my Fisher snow plow always has a little fluid dribbling down the out side. Not enough to make blue drips in the snow or require adding fluid during the long plow season. But I keep looking at it and wondering if it is bad enough to warrent repair. The plow is 10 years old. Anyone have any guide lines they use for this kind of thing ? If I fix it it will be my first time working on a cylinder.

I would only fix it if it was dripping...but you may want to get a seal kit for it to keep in stock just in case.

I think August is a safe month to install the seal kit, the snowy ones are no fun.

Dumb question but in the cylinder repairable or welded variety. On my low end Western Suburbanite the cylinders are throw away versions.

One of the combines was losing over a gallon a day for a good part of last season , Not stopping to do that when the sun is shining !
One of the lift cylinders on the dozer loses about a gallon a day too .

Sounds like I can hold off on fixing it - Thanks for the advise. I agree August would be a better time.

I assume it is repairable but not positive. There is a big nut on top where the ram exits. I guess I just learned what welded cylinder means.
Thanks all

Gordon,

Those plow rams are the easiest to repack DIY.......measure the dia (more than likely 1 1/2" dia) and any plow supply/hyd repair shop has them....

you can tighten up the gland nut for temp fix......not too tight, just a little...

1.500 x 2.000 V packing set......http://www.alleghenyyork.com/pdf/vee/packing_sets.pdf

K-1500 wiper........http://www.alleghenyyork.com/pdf/wipers/k_double.pdf

Easy as pie.........just grease the individual vees lightly as you install them (don't cram them all in at once)......

Thanks - That does look pretty simple.
I have already tightened the gland nut as much as I dare. Not sure what happens if I go to tight but I assume you can lock the ram ??

I'd be more worried about cracking the ductile iron gland nut (which renders the cyl N/G)....it won't lock up the ram, but it won't retract too good....

When the time you have spent thinking about the problem exceeds the time it would take to fix it you should fix it.

I agree, which likely means it is time to fix it. Once it starts to drip it's time to fix it. If it is just collecting dust it can wait.
