would like to understand how the base program operates; decent graphing and things of that matter. wold he base program without the ip version do this stuff?

As far as I know, the software doesn't need the IP unless you want the internet connection. There is a serial/USB Data Logger from the console to computer. This connector comes with the non IP Weatherlink software. Truthfully, I haven't gotten into the graphing/historical stuff yet.

Try FAQ for more info.

Hope this helps. I know I was totally confused :confused2: probably still am

ETA: "How is WeatherLinkIP different from the original WeatherLink?
Our original WeatherLink Software allows you to view and keep historical records, raw data, graphs, your own custom reports and more from your own weather station—all on your own PC. It also has provisions for making your own web pages, which you can create and upload to your own internet site. However, to do this, you need to know how to make a web site, buy the domain name, and set up your site with a host.

WeatherLinkIP includes all the features of the WeatherLink software, plus it does all the web site creation, upkeep, and hosting for you. No web page designing or set up, no hosting fees or uploads, no domain names needed. With WeatherLinkIP, you plug your data logger into your Vantage Pro or Vantage Pro2 console or Envoy and into your router/hub for immediate data upload. "

The major issue with the cheap stations I had purchased was they were wired and limited where I could locate the station. Our house is surrounded by trees, and I could never get accurate wind readings. With the wireless unit, I have the station mounted on a pole 150' from the house in my open meadow. The console is in my basement media closet. The range of the wireless is that good.

The wireless station setup takes minutes and you can have the console where you like and move it anytime you like. The station has a small battery that is supposed to last 8 months without sun and 2 years with good solar. I just changed the battery (a message on the console tells you when it needs to be changed). It has been so long since I changed the battery, I can't tell you how long mine lasted. It took less than a minute to change, however that is because the station is located on a pole in a open area. If you are mounting the station on top of your roof or some other hard to access area, that might be a concern.

I posted earlier about the software I use. I would certainly get the data logger and try the included software before I did the upgrade. But go wireless.

i like the software you use, So I would need to still get the data logger hardware and the oem software set?
This IS starting to make sense to me now.... Will talk with dad about the options today

You need the hardware to down load data to the computer. It has been a while since I purchased my station, but the oem software comes with the data logger hardware. So you can always try that one before buying Weather-Display.

Good luck,

OK station Ordered.
Davis Pro 2 6152c cabled, and usb weatherlink program (i believe the data logger is with this) for a cost of about 465 through AmbientWeather.com - Weather Stations, Radios, Instruments and more
Great site and great prices

Looking at dads place, the peak of the house, where the current station sensors are located is an OK location. We don't need to a wireless unit.
so we are anxiously awaiting the units arrival.

Thanks for the advice!

I've used a Vantage Pro 2 for about a year and a half now, and the only gripe I have with it is its computed heat index. I live in south Mississippi where it can definitely get hot and humid, but the heat index high for August was recorded at 136 degrees. :)

Even here during this summer's wicked heat, that's a bit too high, I think.

Heat index is a composit of heat and humidity, it's a relative number attempting to show the 'effective' heat.

Oh I'm aware of what it is; I'm just saying I think 136 degrees is too high. Either the station's reported temperature is wrong -- and I don't think it is -- the reported relative humidity is wrong, or the algorithm to compute the heat index is wrong.

There are several forums, including WXforum.net - Index, where these sorts of issues are discussed and debated. These are people who are as passionate about wether and weather stations as we are about tractors. I'm sure they would enjoy hearing from you.
