I'm a bit confused by some of the sale ads for JD 20x40 series of tractors - 2040, 2240, 2440, 2640.

I've seen them advertised as collar shift (sliding gear), synchro shift, hi-lo and reverserer.

My confusion comes about when I see a tractor advertised as having a hi-lo transmission and the picture doesn't have the left-hand lever on the console with the rabbit and turtle. However, there's a pic of the double shift levers on the floor with the 2-range shift lever on the left and the 4-speed shift lever on the right.

Are they trying to convince folk's that the 2-range is the hi-lo? If that's the case, then what's with the rabbit and turtle on the left hand lever on the console?

Thanks in advance.

Aren't the rabbit & turtle universal symbols for engine speed/throttle?

Yep... (maybe the rabbit and turtle is on the right side)?

What's the 2nd lever on the console for - besides the reverser?

Isn't that where the hi-lo shift is?

JD did make 40 series with 2 sticks and a high low on the dash. I drove a 2940 that was set up that way. The rabbit and the turtle would be the high and low.

I think those that advertise their 8spds as Hi-Lo just do not know any better.
If you have Rabbit-Turtle on the left, that is the Hi-Lo. Back then Rabbit-Turtle was not used for the throttle as it is now.
I do not think any were syncros.
Only collar shift with or without either Hi-Lo or Reverser, but not both.

My 755 uses the rabbit and turtle for both the throttle and the Hi-Lo range selector.

What year is your 755? My 1974 JD 2030 only uses Rabbit Turtle for the Hi-Lo.
No label for the throttle.

Is the hi-lo a "wet" or hydraulic shift? Or is it a "dry" clutch shift?

Thanks.

Tractors with sticks on the floor have hi-lo in left of steering wheel and SG cabs have a small lever to the left of the sticks on the console if i remember right . Hi lo is hydraulic i believe .

I was interested in these tractors when they were introduced. IIRC, the 2240 was the first available with either hi-low or reverser tranny both functions were hydraulic operated wet clutchpack. Very nice 50 hp (pto) tractor for the day, "I wanted one!":D

The tractor has a main dry clutch. The Hi-Lo unit has an internal wet clutch that allows up or down shifting of the Hi-Lo without clutching.

Basicly the Hi-Lo only allows a down shift and then an up shift back for what ever gear you are in. Say you are brush hogging in 4th gear and hit a heavy patch. With HI-Lo you shift to Lo. Almost the same as shifting to 3rd gear, but no stopping or clutching (non syncronized collar shift transmissions). After you get thru the heavy stuff, you shift from Lo back to Hi with the Hi-LO, and are back in 4th gear, no stopping or clutching.

So a Hi-Lo does not change the 8 speed to 16 speeds, it just allows a down shift and up shift back to the gear you are in without clutching.

PTO clutch can be either wet or dry. I have seen both ways.

Sounds like it (hi-lo) would make for a real nice baler and disc mower tractor!

I'm still "waffling" about selling my 110 and going for a cabbed 4520 or 4720. Gettin' more interested in a nice, 2440 or a 2640 with hi-lo and a 146 FEL.

It makes more sense to have two tractors.. instead of 1 cab model. :D

For a removable FEL look for a JD175 or JD245

Why's that....?

AKfish

If you want to be able to remove the loader. These models are not permenantly mounted.

If you plan to put the loader on and never take it off, don't bother with these.

I think it make the most sense to have both cab models and a canopy tractor with gears just incase you have to argue with someone on TBN popular threads, "Hydro vs. gear and Open station vs. cab.

Check out the 820 thread below this one, I posted a pico f my 820 canopy.

Yep... gotta cover ALL sides of the debate!! :D

'Course I've sat in the cab of the 4000 series - and I don't think there's quite enough room for both the TV and my toothbrush - 'cause that's where I'd be living if the JD dealer's tractor-trailer pulled up with 2 new cabbed 4520 and 4720!

I've had a 2240 and currently have a 2440. Both have "regular" sliding gear transmissions. 2 sticks on the transl or "floor", the left one is low, high and reverse, the right one is 1-4. Neither are synchronized, but you can usually double clutch the 1-4 at speed at least 1-2 and 3-4 upshifts. The reverser and hi low are hydraulic and didn't hold up well.
The 2440 is a great tractor, my father bought it used a month after I was born in 79. Its currently got 9800 hrs on it with the original motor, 1 clutch job and 2 pump rebuilds. For years it was the main tractor on the farm, haying, plowing, and chopping corn.
