Congratulations on a great deal Roy! This new ride will give you the gears you love, and much nicer shifting for loader work, etc. I don't think it's less manly at all! Keep us posted on the tires, etc. I'm thinking that you are going to look pretty good up there, and it may take a while to wipe your smile off.......... and that is a very good thing!

Believe me, that smile will get smacked off as soon as my wife sees it (she'll see it at home before I will).
I'd told her I was buying a smaller tractor so she could use it...

This is very true....I'll be taking Testosterone suppliments as soon as the 4400 is delivered.

But the hat stays...just wearing it is better then using viagra!

Good grief, that's funny!

Great to see you didn't trade in your sense of humor too!

Roy, if you had R1's on that, i'd trade you my R4's! i just reversed both my front and rears for wider stance. not sure why they made it like this, but the front is wider than the rear. the original configuration, the front and rear had the same overall width. now the fronts are 61" (same as bucket) and the rears only about 57" (overall width, outside to outside).

i haven't taken it on the slope yet to see how much better it feels.

It will feel a LOT better.

You bet it will!!!!!!
Heck, just swapping the fronts on my 790 was a great improvement.

I'm really surprised defed's rears were narrower then the fronts. I think they were set on the narrow position. The 790's rear R-4's are about 6" wider (using my memory on this...so take that number with a grain of salt) then the front tires (even after I swapped side to side).

well, it doesn't feel much better! it has to be the height of the ride that makes it feel so bad. if i look at the slope on the side of the road, it doesn't even look close to being bad, but as soon as i'm on it, it feels like 45 degrees! i think i am going to see if my uncle (welding shop owner) can make me some solid extensions for the rear. i can only go about 2" more on each side before it's as wide as the bucket.

my ford 600 has a bit of a wider stance (and lower ride) and i never felt that i was even close to tipping.

i forgot to get the current measurements of the width, but when both front and rear where in the narrow position, they had the same overall width. with both in wide position, front is 61" and rear is about 57".

Defed, I know that feeling very well. The part of our yard behind the pool gets mowed every week and I'll even turn around on it and I've never felt unsafe at any time (just finished it in fact). If I get just two wheels on that patch with the 4200 I feel like I'm about to tip over. I've gotten off and jostled the thing and its solid which means it just feels that way because you're so high up. Still, putting the tires to the widest did make it feel safer for me.

Roy, your's will do the same. The widest position has wider fronts than rear.

Hi Arrabil...
Yeah, after reviewing the operator manual, I see what you mean by setting those rims wider. My 670 and 790 both had welded wheels, so the only thing you could do was swap 'em or reverse them (which meant dismounting the tires due to them being directional). Since both tractors were pretty stable (especially the 790 due to those wide, filled R-4's), I never had any reason to move them. I also gotten off and gave the tractors a push on a slope that felt "death defying" with no dire effects (I wonder if anyone has ever rolled their tractor doing this..."oops!!").

Defed, when I got my 670, I had the same fears you are having now. I installed one of the R&B Tiltmeters. Those slopes I "knew" were more then 25° turned out to be less then 15°. You'll get used to the height of the tractor, but don't lose respect for those slopes!!!!

Arrabil, did you reposition the hubs on your rims? Is this a one man job (assuming the tires aren't filled)? Do you have to dismount the tires to do this job?

I repositioned the rims before I filled the tires. I had the wheels off the tractor. Its was easy for me by myself but it probably depends more on the condition of one's back than one's strength. Mine were at the narrowest when I got it. Unless you're at the widest I doubt you can get chains on turfs to clear the fenders.

Geez, I feel like the captain of the John Deere 770, 790, 3005 club has been traded.

Enjoy the new rig, Roy.!!

one thing i realized that i REALLY hate about this 4300 (and 4400 for that matter) is the pto engagement lever. there is NO room to move it. every time i try to disengage, i hit the 3pt lift lever and my implement goes flying up. i suppose if it was EASIER to move the pto lever, this wouldn't be as bad, but that thing can be really stubborn to disengage.

if i don't hit the 3pt lever, then i end up hitting my hand on the seatbelt bracket, or even the seat itself. TOO TIGHT in there.

another thing i noticed today about slopes is, going one direction feels worse than the other. not sure why, but if i drive w/ left side down, it doesn't feel like i'm going to tip over as much. i parked on the slope and tried the 'will it tip with a little push test' and it feels like there is still quite a bit holding it down. even so, would like to push the rears out to 60".

I also have always had the feeling that right side down is more tippy. I know it is just mental, but some places I will only go through with left side down. Maybe something to do with being right handed.

I would guess both of you are right handed?
