If you think me callus for using an analogy that I believe furthers my point, Well I guess I would have to point out that I believe when the government gets into the business of being "compassionate" we don't have to look to far to see what a incredible hash that can become.
I believe that the people of the United States are the most compassionate and caring in the world, and that if need be, will feed and clothe any citizen who is truly in need.
What I feel strongly about(in case you haven't guessed)
is that it is NOT the governments role to administer these programs, it should be where it was always traditionally,been
Churches, Mosques, Synagogues.NGO'S
If you want to see an example of Government largess, please Google "Bonus Army". I fear that we will soon see something similar.

So ANY solution is better than NO solution? That seems to be your point mossroad. If YOU want to pay extra taxes to take care of those you deem "less fortunate," I have no objection. just don't tell me I also have to donate to that cause. I may want to, I shouldn't HAVE to. The problems we have today are the culmination of the last 50 years of government doing more for people and encouraging them to do less. I don't suggest reversing that trend is going to be easy or even possible. I DO now that continung that trend can only be accomplished by taking more from those who have more and giving it to those who have less and THAT cannot continue indefinitely. (It's why communes fail unless everyone pitches in fairly)

It sounds like a good idea to me. I get the feeling that a lot of the testing and so forth done on terminal patients is for the purpose of making money. The longer they can keep a person legally 'alive', the more they make. For some reason, living wills can get ignored.

My father had a living will. Then he got cancer. The doctor discussed his living will with him, since he was of sound mind. My father thought he would use the living will in his 90s, not his 70s. He wasn't ready to go. Full of life, good brain and body. Plenty of exploring and discovering left to do. So he rejected his living will. He died a couple days later. They revived him. They stabilized him. The doctor discussed it again with him. He rejected it again. A couple weeks later he died. They revived him. They stabilized him. They discussed it again. They stopped his heart to correct a bad rhythm. They revived him. They discussed it again. He rejected it. He died again a week later. They revived him. They stabilized him. They discussed it again. He had had enough by then. They loaded him up with morphine and he passed away peacefully the next day. I smile because he fought the good fight.

The point is, some folks don't want to go. And sometimes their relatives don't want to let them go. If you have a living will, make sure your family knows when you want it used and under what circumstances. If your doctor won't follow your wishes, fire him.

Just read an article on privacy abuses...

In a nutshell it said unless you belong to a membership store... a retail establishment has no right to ask to see your receipt when leaving unless they believe you are committing a crime... it also said that the merchant doesn't have a right to require ID when paying by credit card...

Here in CA... just about 100% of the stores require ID and many check receipts... totally the opposite when I shop in Washington State... it's like night and day.

I know my tractor dealer made a copy of my driver's license when I bought and used a credit card for part of the purchase.

You might not think so ,but I AM on your side.
To use your Dad as an example, What if the doctor was the only one available(you know, the government doctor, because, most of them had "retired" from private practice after the government slashed their pay, in order to make things "more efficient".) suggested that your Dad had lived a good life and perhaps , because it would just be a waste of money to try and prolong his life, so lets just "let him go". If you think I am exaggerating Please look at some of the stories about NHS in the UK.
A story two days ago in the Sun was about a patient who had to call the switchboard of the hospital, because the nurse refused to bring him a glass of water. The nurse then told the switchboard operator that the patient was "difficult", and no need to take any further action.He died

I'm not saying ANY solution is better than no solution. I am saying there are a bunch of people in this thread whining about the current situation but offering NO solution.

The fact is there are millions of have-nots in this country that are not going away. Now what are we going to do with them and who is going to pay for those solutions? That's why I support a flat tax across the board with no minimum or maximum income limits. Everyone pays an equal percent. I also support a list of social programs. Work for welfare and mandatory drug testing for welfare. I support lower prison terms for minor non-violent drug users. I support community service for repentance: work release. I support free drug rehab for two time losers. I support three strikes you're out to some extent. I support public education. Hey, public education is about as socialist as you can get. Take my money to teach someone else's child. What if I don't have kids? Why should my tax dollars pay for public school? Because if we don't educate our neighbor he will be some drooling fool stealing to survive.

If you look at the traditional role of those groups. Yes.
If the government wasn't deducting an obscene amount of taxes out of your pocket, wouldn't you be more inclined to help out your favorite charity.
These groups have also been more "efficient" at charity, than government.

I,ll say i was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis,not my choice but the cards I was delt and I don,t complain,but am I to understand from this post I,m no longer worthy of living because soc. sec sents me a small monthly check? After I paid in for years.What the **** has this come down to.i got mineor stole it or what ever the **** with me? I just don,t understand the out right hate in this country any more.I was a vol. fire fighter/first responder,what have you volinteered to this country.I joined military twice was drafted once and was rejected for health resons.I did my best am honest to a fault and now I should be thrown on the trash heap?Your all so willing to let the politcians rob country blind but the health care of people is a cost too dear?Its this kind of talk thats ripping this nation apart by its seams I,v heard a lot of complaining and no solutions.This is just nuts and i,ll have no more part of it so this will be my last post.I thought as a disabled person I could join like minded country folks but boy was I wrong!I.m sorry cyril but I just can,t listen to this crap any longer or I,ll be looking for a stout limb and sturdy rope Dave

We Honor your service to this country, and I for one feel that anyone who has put himself in harms way should not have to worry about the necessities after achieving "senior" status.
But I think we need to "look behind the curtain"
Where did all that money that you and millions of others paid in SS go? Was it squandered by the same politicians who now want an even bigger pot of gold?

The population of the U.S. has doubled since I was a kid. The world population has tripled. The folks that started our church used to give two bucks a week in the collection basket because that was a lot of money back then. They still give two bucks a week 50 years later. The church is going broke. The number of parishioners is dropping. That is the case with most religions in this country. Since we are not supposed to discuss religion and politics, I will not delve any further into why I think that is. I do not think the Churches, Mosques and Synagogues, and other organized groups like the Salvation Army, St. Vincent De Paul, The Shriners, Elks, Moose, you name the group, are able to handle the masses of needy people any more. Too few members giving too few dollars to help too many people. It is sad, but true.
