I just went to ebay and did a search for "screw type log splitter" and found auctions for just the cone and another for two 3 pt "table" style splitters.

The difference is that you hold the chainsaw by its handles and hold it away from your body. .

People are getting hit by these hand held {away from the body} chainsaws all the time. I have seen up close and personal what a hungry chainsaw can eat when it decides to "kickback". I don't care if someone is the strongest lumberjack in the world, a chainsaw can still kick their butt !!!

I have never put a block of wood between my chainsaw and all my vital organs , then leaned on the block of wood trusting my cat like reflexes to kick in just before I am impaled.
it is the first thing your dad teaches you when you get your first pocket knife: work away from your body.
if thats not common sense then.....

I know that you guys are having a bit of fun with these splitters. They certainly do not look safe, but they probably are safer than they look, with prudent caution. They are quite popular here and many are for sale on our equivalent to Ebay. I will give you a few examples for your amusement. Some are no more than a big 3 phase motor with the screw #1, but I chose especially the tractor attachment models, since this is a tractor forum. #5 is my personal favorite--you could split the tree before you cut it down. :D

By the way I do not have any of these and really do not plan on getting any.

Mike

Many years ago I was given a "Stickler" screw type wood splitter that bolted on the rear axle of a pick-up truck. It did work very good on long wood but I found that I had twice as much chain saw work to do by splitting it first.

As far as the danger goes there was a kill switch you were supposed to wire in the the trucks electrical system, which I didn't do. One day while splitting wood I reached for another piece to split and kind of lifted one leg off the ground for balance. My boot happened to come in contact with the screw and began to feed the sole of my boot into the screw. In a split second of extreme fear I yanked my foot away pulling the sole right off my boot before it touched my foot.

Had I taken the proper percaution the near accident would not have happened. Any splitter has the potential to be dangerous and some have more potential than others.

Thanks Mike.
Wish they were more available here. I like the first one, and the one on the shaft and two pillow block bearings. Will continue looking for the screw head with some idea to make a bench model for splitting split wood into kindling when needed.

I think that I would use a hatchet, but I have hear of people smashing their fingers or chopping a part of one off too. Here is a link to the Polish site, maybe something here will give you an idea. You can search on świder or swider--that will give you lots of things like vertical drills and post hole diggers, but included in that will be these splitters. You can also look here for regular splitters and these.

Someone posted that these could be found on Ebay searching on screw splitter.

I had a gas powered screw log splitter form about 1973 to 1980. It worked fine and I never thought it was dangerous. Like any tool, you have to use your sense. The biggest problem was that some tough wood could screw in and stall it. It should have had a reverse. I had to very carfully cut with a chain saw on the edge of the wood as near to the screw as possible and then start it again and it would split. A fat log could go to the end of the screw without spitting and then it would sit and turn.

When I started using more wood I sold it for a gas powered hydraulic to avoid the stalling problem. I split a lot of black locust and the screw type is not the best for that.

Just search for Bark Buster Wood splitter. The Feds recalled them back in 91. See below for an article I found.

The Bark Buster Wood Splitter was a screw type wood splitter that first came on the market in the 1970's. These splitters came in two different models - some attached to a PTO (power take-off) drive on a tractor or truck, while others were simply individual units powered by gas.

In 1991, the federal government placed a recall on Bark Buster brand log splitters. The Consumer Protection Safety Commission warned people against using this product, as they had found it to be very dangerous after investigating customer claims. Models from up until the 1998 version were all considered unsafe, with the potential to cause serious injuries to a persons arms, hands, fingers or legs. At the time of the report Bark Busters had caused four major injuries and one death. Since then, these wood splitters are no longer made - though other brands of auger-type log splitters do exist.

They were considered unsafe because of three key features that were missing. The first was that there was no easily accessible power switch. Along the same lines, the bark buster had no kill switch or "dead man's switch" that could be used to turn off the device in case of an emergency. Finally, the wood splitter didn't have an effective guard to help protect people's bodies from the dangerous auger, which led to people's clothing getting caught.

It's important to learn a lesson from the Bark Buster. If your going to use and auger-type wood splitter or log splitter, be sure that at the very least it contains basic safety functions. It is a powerful tool and deserving of respect and care - anything less can be injurious or fatal.

I don't know how many of you have actually owned and used a Bark Buster, but I've had one for many years and split hundreds of cords of firewood without incident. First off, you don't have the pto spinning full steam. You can leave the tractor just above an idle, so the screw turns pretty slow, not whirling as some think. Secondly, I can put my gloved or bare hand against the tip while it runs, and it doesn't catch, the tip is designed that way, plus there's a guard that prevents you from walking into it. Thirdly, it's designed to split 16" or longer wood, not long logs. Fourth, the wood CAN'T catch and start spinning if used the properly. There's a pipe that you rest the one end of the log on before you press the other end against the screw, and it prevents the log from spinning.
I can split wood TWICE as fast as my brother with a hydraulic splitter, without even trying. I just think too many people look at them and run scared.

I used one for many years until the pipe to catch the wood broke and the spinning wood almost broke both my arms. Use it with care!

I would have to say, that it is as safe as the operator. Just about like anything, it has an acceptable risk. What generally happens is that someone will get a new device, and without really knowing how it is supposed to work, they go for it. The lack of knowledge of the devise makes it unsafe for that person. I have seen them mounted on the hub of a truck, tractor, and if used correctly, they work. Probably if you ask 10 men to operate that splitter, 5 would do just fine, 3 might think it unsafe and not use it, and 2 people would use it and get seriously hurt. Again, knowledge or lack of it will make the difference.

Yes sir I have one and I too have split many many cords with it and haven't been hurt. I have a healthy fear of the device and use it while sober and alert. I find it extremely fast at splitting wood and very effective though the wood doesn't split up as pretty, more strings. I would love to have a hyrdo splitter just so that I can split and throw into the tractor bucket and honestly, to make it a safer deal.

Yes they work, they are more dangerous than hydro splitters, but they work very well and they are not so dangerous that you shouldn't use them. Just dangerous enough that you need to be more cautious than with other tools.
