I have a cracked PTO gear housing on a 2210 series John Deere new part is $2600.00. I'm told it's called a differential housing. Can anyone tell where to look for such a part used? same part for 2305 series. Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

Welcome to TBN:D

There have been a few post's here on TBN about this issue, And the consensus seems to have been that a PTO shaft on an implement cause the damage. I don't know where you'd find a used one.

Sorry to hear about your 2210. That's a biggee...!!!

Talk with your dealer about salvage machines. He might have an idea of who/where a wrecked or burned, etc. 2210 might be found.

Best of luck.

I don't know if Driffle is still following his thread, but I'd like to ask him how that casting was broken.

It is cast aluminum, so probably not a easy weld repair.

Yep...all castings are porous to a degree which means they're eventually pretty cruddy with oils. As soon as you light a welding torch (talking about MIG or TIG here) to it, all that crap comes to the surface and contaminates the weld.
AKfish has the best idea (IMHO) to look for one off a salvaged machine. Might be cautious of burned tractors though...the heat may have destroyed the temper (if a heat treated casting alloy).

Hmm....
While at the dealer, price out what a "Bare" 2305 would set you back..Might be cheaper in the long haul to buy a new 2305, swap on any attachments you can swap and call it a day...and part out your 2210 to pay the difference. Sometimes these machines are worth more as parts then whole...

$2600.00 for the part plus all the labor (unless you can fix yourself).... MSRP on a 2305 from the Deere website pegs it at 11k.... -10% = 10k +/- out the door...hmm....Not saying Its what I'd do for sure, but I'd certianly look into it further... My Gut reaction/feeling is the cost of repair is kinda high compared to the value of the machine..

**edit** googling the values of 2210's and found this thread:

Very good point - Dave. Sometimes, it just doesn't "pencil out" very good. Either time-wise or dollar-wise.

Then, you have to put on a very determined, and sad - expression when approaching the wife with the news of "BUYING A NEW TRACTOR"!!! :D :D

Err... Sorry... :( :(

Just a note, the OP has only posted once and has not logged back in since...

I would have never thought that any part of a tractor housing main frame would be made of aluminum.
So happy to know about this. You can bet if I ever look for another one I will be checking that out.
Amazing that we look for balast and fill tires for traction and they start building lighter tractors, go figure.

I too would prefer steel castings, but they aren't necessarily stronger then aluminum. We don't know how the OP broke that casting...and it doesn't look like we'll find out (refering to Kennyd's last post).
Anyway, the design, alloying and other factors can resut in a pretty tough aluminum casting. Can't say I've read of a rash of them cracking either.
