Are you planting bamboo, or trying to prevent it from spreading?

i planted 80 bissettii on the 250' long berm, and i'm trying to contain them before they spread!

When we trench for bamboo, we have to put in a rubber or thick plastic wall. 3ft down as I remember... What are you going to do for a barrier in the trench?

here is more on the "whys" of trenching --

Controlling Bamboo

i chose this open design because it drains water to a central receiver box, too.

with an open trench (such as this) you don't need to go deep, which you have to do with a barrier.

My two acres has three sides of bamboo, each leg about 320 ft, about 3 to 5 ft thick, and about 30 ft tall. Anybody need some fishing poles, or you can make flutes or wind chimes out of them. Maybe even a bamboo doorway.

You must not be on good terms with your neighbor. There is a patch near me that has spread over a half acre. Another neighbor had to get a back hoe to remove what was growing in his yard and some still came back the next growing season. Good luck with trying to contain it.

Was mowing it down as it spread not an option? I planted 2 plants about 4 years ago to create a screen around a deck, it has spread all through the bed as I designed it to, as the runners come out i just mow them down and they dont seem to come back. Bamboo is a grass after all.
It seems that trench would be a maintenace issue over time and even a possible safety hazzard.
looks like fun work though

I never thought of the open trench Idea. how deep did you go? You sure this is going to work?

Also, love the PB rescue work you do. Great dogs. And the pix you took (or whoever took) are A+

The principle of digging the trench is sound, because it allows one to see the shoots as they try to spread horizontal. They also usually stay about 4 to 6 in below the surface. The plastic barrier is designed to deflect the shoots somewhere else.

hi all --

thanks for your compliments on the dogs and pics -- i photograph them myself -- :D

also, as for the trench, it's the suggested barrier, so you can stop the rhizomes as they try to cross the trench (with a spade) -- with a physical barrier, they just get re-routed -- so they're always trying to get through!

i planted 120 bamboo along the back 500' property line -- those i will stop by lawnmower -- these ones were too close to driveway, etc., so i went with the trench. also, i need the trench for drainage.

Thanks for the info on the trench. Do you then just cut the ryzomes as they appear or spray them or?

As for the pix, they are great. Exactly the kind of photos that helps a very difficult cause as yours. Makes a great dog look like what they are, great dogs. LA is the land of pits... and a lot of bad pit owners... We are boxer rescue people ourselves.

2 things - Routine application of napalm controls bamboo
That dog pic looks more to me like he was caught in the act with whatever he is carrying, is sorry, and will put it back.

Bamboo makes the best ever privacy fence. It's almost impenetrable, and I may plant it around my fishing pond. Simply mowing the new shoots will keep it from spreading. Don't know about bamboo, but most plant roots will not change soil types. If the roots run into a different soil type, they change direction. So maybe you could just pour a little aluminum sulfate or lime into the trench, depending on your soil type, and fill it up with soil.

That pitty is 9 kinds of cute!

Look above the Power-Trac in the upper part of the picture. There is a wall of bamboo there. Or do you mean a close up?

OFF BUT ON TOPIC:
Has anyone been sucessful at obtaining strats from an existing plant? I tried cutting a shoot off and using some of my ever so fetile mud technique i have used on so many other things but the bamboo just dies. I tried cutting a fresh runner and it did not take.

Eric,

Are you going to fill the trench with sand?
