Help!! How Bad Is It? (Hydraulic System Junk)

I was distracted while topping off the hydraulic fluid and have spent the last two evenings bush hogging the lower pasture and along the river topless. That is to say running without the fill cap on. After an extensive search I found the cap but I am worried about the junk that has gotten in to my machine. Grass clippings, small twigs...ect. I watched a little twig fall in through the fill hole as I lifted the seat and discovered the cap was missing . What do I need to do other than the obvious new fluid and filter???

Get the stick out. With the drain plug out pour in some fresh fluid to flush it out. Remove sreen and clean out and change the filter. Refill. Put dipstick back in. All should be good. I wouldn't worry. The screen and filter took care of you there.

P.S. Make sure you put the dipstick back in.

'The screen' and 'the filter' are two different things. Make sure you clean the screen too. I don't know if the B2400 has screens but most HST tractors have at least one. And usually theres a second screen for the rest of the hydraulics.

The screen and filter have taken everything that fell in out of circulation. Its not like things were being sucked in. The hole was shrouded by the seat. Filter capacity will be negligibly affected. Just top it off and put the cap on.

Agreed, its unlikely that anything bad got into that little fill hole but if you do decide that now is a good time for an oil change, do the screens at the same time. Actually the worst stuff is usually already in the transmission. Thousands of tiny metal fillings - courtesy of the factory and the first few hours of operation.

Thanks guys. I was about due for a fluid change and I will change out filter. Thanks for the tip on the screens, I know Matt mentioned it but your coments helped to reinforce the need to find them and clean them.

If I recall correctly, on my B2400 the screen is on the end of the banjo bolt that holds the suction line (tube) to the side of the sump, under the right foot rest. Once the fluid is drained from the sump, remove the banjo bolt and clean the screen.
