L3400DT w/463 FEL (AG tires)
Model Year: 2009
My first owned tractor, so far a good experience. We maintain about 6 acres of pasture of our own, and about 40 belonging to a friend nearby. 5 foot rotary cutter is a good match for overgrown fields, I built a snow screen and bucket skids for snow removal this winter, plus added studded ice chains for the rear. No problems. We hauled out a few cords of firewood this winter, again no troubles. Built a log hauling frame for the 3ph. Speaking of 3ph, it IS a bit rough raising, but not to the point of being unacceptable. I knew that going in. Build quality isn't what Kubota used to be, but still excellent compared to other brands. Great driving tractor, comfortable enough for a full day in the field if necessary. Decent fuel economy, expect about a gallon per hour if you're working it. Fuel gauge isn't the most accurate, but is consistent at least. It's probably a price point, but it should come standard with at least one rear remote. Even as an option it would be attractive. As it is, Kubota doesn't offer a remote kit for this tractor, so you're either going to pay the dealer to piece one together for you, or build it yourself from parts. FEL joystick is too long, I shortened it by about 5 inches, now I can get on from either side. Wider rear tires would be nice, if you use it on soft ground. Glad we got the gear tranny, two friends of mine have the HST version, and both sometimes wish they had the DT. The two-stage clutch works very well, nice to engage the PTO before the drive wheels. Another reviewer mentioned the difference between low and reverse gear ratios, and they are correct, it's not perfect. I'd prefer to see a simple shuttle shift between forward and reverse, with a high and low range selection separately. Not a showstopper, but a little thing. Overall, a very capable basic tractor, and one I'd buy again if the need arose. If you need mid-size power, simple mechanically and electrically, and don't need all the extra bells and whistles, the L3400 is definitely worth a good hard look and certainly a test drive. It'll sell itself from that point.
Pros: Simple reliable tractor, rugged and well designed for the most part. Typical Japanese quality.
Cons: Rough 3PH, long loader joystick, no rear remotes.
