Out baling haylage today and just after making a turn into the next windrow the tractor just died. Tried a restart after zeroing all switches, setting brake, etc. Display comes up, goes through pre-ignition sequence then turn the key...nothing. Wow, weird. No error messages on display. Check three major fuses on engine, all good. Pull steering wheel in lower position remove dash cover to get to fuse bank.
Start checking fuses. Fuel fuse, a red 10 was burned out. Hmmm, could it be the fuel filter? Did a re-install of a new filter at 192 hours, now at 325 hr. So walked back to the farm, grabbed a replacement filter and tortured myself as these filters are not in an easy place to get if you have a FEL! Had to destroy the filter to finally get it off. On too tight! Gory details, I will not go into. Got the new filter on, bled the water separator just for good measure, then ran the pre-start sequence to fill the filter. Tractor started then died. OMG, that same fuse just burned out again! And again, and again. I ran out of #10 fuses. Something else going on here...
Now I am looking at the water separator and guess what the Tech Manual shows? The filtering sequence is Fuel filter / water separator first, then fuel feed pump to secondary fuel filter (the metal canister type) then to supplier pump which feeds common rail and injectors.
So I realize I have a replacement filter element for the water separator / filter but for the life of me I can't figure out how to remove the clear lower portion of the filter!
There is nothing, I mean NOTHING in the manual or the Tech Manual about how to remove the lower clear section and replace the filter element. That filter is first not second in line. Why no mention of that?
I really think this is the issue but I am not wanting to try something stupid like breaking the plastic lower bowl because it won't come off. Special filter wrench? Any of you guys have any feedback on how this critter comes apart?
So the haylage is getting rained on tomorrow, the tractor sits in the field. Sometimes farming is just full of failures and bad timing!
Sorry for such a long story but the details are important.
