ok, but the point was does the 23 hp B&S Vanguard motor in my Gravely have an alternator that will properly charge an AGM battery regardless of who makes it?
Don't AGM batteries require different final voltage levels vs lead acid?

I just bought a Napa Legend/ East Penn conventional sealed battery because the last one lasted almost ten years.
The alternator was happy with lead acid. Unless it has auto battery detect and charge profile switching,
how can this end well with an agm? Does it just not charge them all the way up? Or worse too much. That's what I think happened to me
before with an Ultima failure.

I religiously use an external 5a smart charger on all my batteries. It autodetects agm and I know the battery is getting properly charged, and also
desulphated for the long haul.

How about lithium? what charge profile does it want? Is my generator alternator going to recognize anything more than lead acid?

As far as an AGM vs a flooded wet cell battery (old fashioned conventional type) I have heard and read that the AGM should not be charged with one of the smaller chargers that push the voltage higher then 14 Volts.
I do know that there is no difference in the alternator in my truck with an AGM compared to a conventional battery. The thing I like the most about the AGM's is that you shouldn't have any cable corrosion as there should be no off gassing. My last AGM went about 4 years in my pickup before being replaced and the one in this one is about 3 years old now.
Also I've got a Lithium in my Harley and it's an amazing battery in that big twin and it seems to be holding up well with the factory charging system, they did recommend their own trickle/maintenance charger for it.
Amazing what a 5 pound battery will do.

agm's can't be desulfated, at least not with a equalize charge,as they can't boil the battery to fix.

your alternator puts out 14.4 or some variant of that period. almost nothing is multistage, unless you specifically buy one, and there is ways to determine agm vs lead acid, or even lipo just based on voltage.

just used the sealed battery and move on, i have a 3/4 dead flooded that i have kept alive for 4 years simply by leaving it on the battery tender.

Dave, thanks. Guess I need to look at yellow tops. Am familiar with Xantrex, good equipment found as upgrade in rvs and boats.
belt and suspenders, something to back up the gen. I'd rather have a water wheel and a hydro gen...

I was suggesting AGM, primarily with Inverter use inside a house you rent in mind... no muss/fuss etc.

Deep-cycle doesn't matter.... till it does..... FLA, AGM, and other chemistries don't like deep DODischarge in anything remotely like a Starting battery - heavy Starting load followed by rapid recharge is the life they are primarily intended for......

Using an inverter to briefly support some light electronic loads, then regularly topped off..... just about any battery will give decent service. Start regularly pounding the DOD down below 75-80 %, and leaving it down for a while..... many lesser starting batteries will have a much shorter usable life.

Somebody I know asked me for a battery recommendation for their Tree farm utility trailer that lived behind a pickup.... after asking about usage pattern, I suggested a fairly hefty FLA deep-discharge battery. They'd use the winch on the trailer often enough, then only throw it on a charger back at the shop at the end of the day. Yep, should be +12 coming out of the trailer receptacle on the p/u, but like many farm trucks, the trailer wiring was pretty sketchy..... so the poor battery typically didn't see many incoming electrons while mobile......

Last I heard from the tree farm, they were much happier with the lifespan they were getting out of that FLA DD......

I use one of these B&D sealed chargers on my AGMs.

I added a 10 watt solar panel & waterproof controller to our dump trailer equipment box lid. Does a good job of keeping the deep cycle topped off between uses. No nearby power for a maintainer where it gets parked.

On the generator related side, I installed a replacement battery in the Champion 7K dual fuel today. The 7 year old original was kaput. I also ordered a replacement ignition switch. It has been broken for a while now. The "on" and "start" postions work fine but the "off" position doesn't work. I've just been closing the fuel valve. Figured I should get it squared away.

BTW, the champion generator web site is a pretty good example of what a support site should be. No problem downloading a manual with exploded diagrams and part numbers on a discontinued machine. No problem using that part number to order the switch via their "shop" section. $5 for the three way switch & $5 for Fedex (or USPS priority) shipping.

I went to O'riellys auto parts store and purchased
a small battery for my generator 3 year free
replacement and more amps than the original
Just want to be ready should any power outages
come around. I have seen people try to test their
batteries that are connected to like 4 batteries
I had to tell them you have to disconnect the
batteries so you only test one at a time fo find
out witch ones are good or bad

around and they happened to see this blonde in
a farmers field in a row boat rowing like crazy but
there's no water. The blonde driver says that's the
kind of blondes that give us a bad name. The
blonde passenger says if I knew how to swim I
would swim out their and give her a piece of my
mind

Good solution for personal use..... OK, maybe not for one buddy of mine... he's the type to break an anvil

Lots of mobile signage (construction, emergency...) rocking solar today, so it's a good solution.

"Normal" construction or farm crews, not sure I'd bother with a solar panel.... the equipment gets beat on too hard......

Haven't owned one yet, but the feedback I've had on here and real-world about Champion has been good.

Thanks for posting the support details ^; IMO that is a real acid-test of how serious an OEM is about their business and their orientation towards non-disposable products. (y)
