FINALLY, the power went out. 7.5 Kubota Onan fired right up. Ran it for a few hours til 1 AM, and figured no sense running it all night mostly for Fridge and Freezer. So, shut off all lights I didn't want to come on in the middle of the nigh IF the power returned. Returned to a dark house and went to bed. I had left my adjustable bed in an unsually high position! It was raining and I didn't want to go out and start the Diesel so I could lower my Bed.

It is nice to have UPS devices that can be shut down and repowered.

I'm used to older UPSs, that lock out (AC wise) like your older one..... I'm not sure how common it is for newer UPS to be able to restart w/o grid-AC.

There is a lot I like about having a good quality DC/AC inverter supported by a large battery bank.

Asking about water Rob..... I'm always on the lookout for new/efficient pump technology...... how do you pump water during an extended outage ?

Rgds, D.
I think it would run my pump, but I didn't try it, as I don't need to. With my artesian well, drinking water never stops coming out of the ground,

I just grab a food grade pail, and get what ever I need.

I guess if I wanna get lazy, I can hook my pto gen set up and easily run the whole house. lol

I have a Honda eu7000i gen set (fuel injected) which has seen use every year but not to power the house. About three weeks ago our power went out and I wheeled out the Honda and hooked it up to our new Reliance load center that has a generator or mains switch. I turned on every breaker in the house except for HVAC and the Honda was just loafing along. I'm betting the 30 amp genny might start and run one of the ACs.

Not wishing another major outage your way soon John, but if it does happen, feel free to post up your fuel consumption. I probably should stop by Fuelly and see if they have generator listings :), but at least me and a few other members of the tribe here would be interested to see some real-world #'s for that model......

Is your 7kw as quiet as it's smaller brothers ?

Gotta love ground pressure !

That is cool. The main reason for me buying the pto genny was for the option to have water, because the eu2000 can cover the basic.

And after looking at a lot of options to get a good filtered drinkable water at home durin power outage ( solar, 12v , smart soft start submersible pump, hand pump in the well) the cheapest solution was the pto unit. I eventually ( but is is far on the to do list) want to have a 50 or 100 gallons feah water rank in the basement, with a sureflo 12v on demand rv pump. So I can fill it up using the pto genset and then be good for a few days for qater need, and run the basic in the house qith either the pure sin qave inverter and the 60kwh battery from the electric car or the honda eu2000.

If my well have had pressure like yours, i most likely would have never bought a pto unit.

One of my frien have a well like that that have decebt pressure and that been overflowing in the ditch 24/7 since it was dug, decade ago.....
The other day he was cleaning his ashpalt driveway with a pressure washer and sone*»new in town*» neighbor stop by to give him **** about wating water ..... he had a good laugh at him and showed him the 3:4in pipe that been wasting all the water in the ditch !! Lol

Rob, how often do you take a water sample from that well and get it checked? Any "civilization" anywhere nearby?
I ask as I grew up with 70 acres of woods behind our farm house and there was a little stream that went through the middle of it down to the Delaware River.
The water was cold and oh so good to drink, we' lie by the banks and just dunk our heads in.

Then along comes a neighbor up the hill who started to board horses and clearly did not manage the poop well. He polluted the local aquifer, polluted our woods stream and polluted our family farm well, many properties downhill of their place. Had to install a chlorinator which ruined everything, my Father was seriously upset.
You assume these old wells are clean but?
I bet a glass of water from there would taste mighty good.

Clean water, a very valuable resource.

I read that 19 percent of California is now powered by solar, quite a remarkable figure. They also said there was diminishing returns as that percentage grew, sometimes the sun doesn't come out and the wind doesn't blow. Nothing like a good nuke for cheap energy but they have sure fallen out of favor. I mean, is there any combustion fueled power plant that actually is still in favor? They are even moving away from nat gas, which I thought was cleanest option.

I bought my pto generator waaaay back when my mom was still with us, she had to have electricity for medical reasons 24/7/365 and the power went out for a week. I had a brand new Kohler powered welder/generator and I ran it all that time, talk about drink gas!!!

SO, I was on the hunt for a pto generator and when farm a store was going under, they had two Winco's, I bought the bigger one (15kw) for $1,200.00 and even though I haven't used it all that much, it has been handy. I exercise it by powering my welder when welding up small projects.

As for my water, no I haven't had it tested lately. I live on a gravel road waay out in the country, and around here, it hasn't changed all that much. This is farm country and half mile east of me, starts over a thousand acres of orchards, everything right around me is pretty much like it was when I was growing up.

Water is the least of my problems, I have three bigger ponds, here's one of them,

standard.jpg

all spring fed, with a pretty nice stream crossing and leaving my place, so I really don't have to worry about water here.

Solar and wind storage batteries in time will help smooth out the power gaps of renewal energy sources. Tesla is pushing hard into the home power market.

The eu7000i is amazingly quiet. I had to deploy it when we had a major house remodel and house addition (we doubled the sq footage) when commercial power went out on two or three different occasions. We ran a couple of long extension cords for their saws and air compressor. The guys were amazed how quiet it was compared to the cheap open frame gen sets. It's very miserly on fuel, I think the specifications are eight hour run time at full load. I've never documented fuel usage but that would be fairly easy since it has an hour meter.

It's electric start and if the battery is dead or even missing, it can be started with a pull rope which I used. The battery was kaput and I needed to use the genny, I was surprised how easily it manually started.

There is one switch on the left side, Off & Run. Turn the switch to Run and push the button. Yup, it's that simple.

It's a great generator, well worth the $4k.

I don't have a generator....got laughed at by the wife when I brought it up.... then, one year she was preparing to go to work (Christmas Eve and she worked at a fancy jewelry store) she was all soaped up in shower when BAM, power went out. I had to go get all the ice cubes, kerosene heater, LARGE stainless bowl....melt ice in bowl over heater so she could rinse herself off.

She's not laughing so hard now!

That said, couple years ago, in winter and still without generator, her wheelchair bound niece with some medical issues came to visit for a week. First day visiting, power goes out. We have no water, no way to heat the house, no lights, oven, fridge....anything AND we have someone here for a week with medical issues.

My brother in law put his diesel generator in back of his truck, drove over and hooked it into my panel (he's an electrician AND we disconnected from the grid)

Ran this for about four days when the power came back on.

Brother in law came back, picked up his truck and generator and THAT VERY NIGHT while his stuff was parked on his property (away from the road) and in front of his house..... his truck with generator got stolen.

They found the truck about a week later dumped in the woods. I don't recall if they ever found the generator or not.

That probably wouldn't have happened to him had we not needed it because he wouldn't have had them together, therefore mobile.

Gotta love how low some people are.
