Ahhhh !! Generators, it seems we never have enough.... so I have a champion 3000/4000 bought 10 years ago, been reliable, but it was too loud when going camping.....

Few years ago I got a deal on a yamaha powered off brand 3000w generator, bought it to be the backup of the champion, barely ever used it, so it sits in my Dad garage he use it around his propery

So I kept the champion for around the house and bought a honda eu2000i for camping and hubting camp, so quiet.... I love it.

But last year I bought the wife a chevrolet bolt EV, and I use it to charge the battery bank on the rv at our fall boondocking spot, so quiet, no more need of a genset at the rv when I have my wife EV there.... but i did kept the honda eu2000 anyway, usefull, easy to cary, quiet, etc....

But, all these small genset where not big enough tu run my water pump for my well in a power outage.

So as I bought a tractor 3 years ago, I started to look for pto generator.

With the covid, most of the flight to northern canada have been cancelled so 2 weeks ago, I drove my pickup from home on the Gaspésie coast to Labrador City for my 2 weeks work rotation, and while I was up there I was talking generator with a coworker and he spoted a decent price pto generator in Matane, wich was on my way back, out of the dang Ferry ! So I talk with the seller, saying I wanted to test it. Got to his home and he had everything setup. We tested ( Some basic test, unloaded, at least I know it is producing 120/240)it with his tracor.

So short story, 2 days ago I added, for 850$, a trailer mounted 15kw pto generator to my generator collection. So now I really need to install a interlocking kit with a 60 amp male generator plug to my house.

Eventually, I want to try to charge my wife car with it, so I can have a fairly accurate kw/h usage and I could get a good idea of how many kw/h per gallon of fuel this setup is using. And even just for the heck of it figure the diesel mpg for my electric car.

And eventually, I will get me a 200 gallons fuel tank at home, for the tracor and Now and then I could fill my old duramax with it to have a decent fuel rotation in the tank as I don’t use the travtor more than 50-100 hours per year.

Ouffff another started project to add on the ongoing project listing....

We had our power go out from 11:30 am to the following morning at 6:30am as we had LOT's of wind and rain go through, putting tree's over the power lines...

So, I had a chance to run my Honda 2000 some, then after two hours, I put it away and started my Honda 2200, both inverter generators...

They are so quiet and efficient, and the 2200 really is all I needed, as I had my fridge, freezer, sump pump, a small fan, couple LED lights, TV and satellite, all on at the same time, along with charging some phones.

It EASILY covered all the loads and just sipped fuel, only speeding up much at all, when everything was on at once.

Cool that you have a pto genny, I'm looking too. My concern with your diesel storage is that if you don't use enough it could get contaminated with moisture, algae etc. However, If you are going to use the same fuel in your Duramax, than you don't want to put coloured fuel in that big tank, as the fines for running off-road fuel on the hwy would be horrendous. I would just have several (5/6) good quality 20L gerry cans and use them up in order. Keep winter fuel separate in some other cans. That way every time you think that bad weather is coming you only need to fill up the last one or two that are empty... My 2cents, Dutchy

PT, that install is a thing of beauty.
FIQ, good score, may it be reliable for you and should light it all up. I know running a tractor engine is not the most efficient per kw
but like the old drag cars, you run what you brung, and you have the tractor, which often needs some exercise anyway.

FINALLY, the power went out. 7.5 Kubota Onan fired right up. Ran it for a few hours til 1 AM, and figured no sense running it all night mostly for Fridge and Freezer. So, shut off all lights I didn't want to come on in the middle of the nigh IF the power returned. Returned to a dark house and went to bed. I had left my adjustable bed in an unsually high position! It was raining and I didn't want to go out and start the Diesel so I could lower my Bed.

Tried to sleep that way, but after a couple of hours had a plan. Made my way with flashlight through a very messy shop to get the Inverter the Telephone System runs on.

Got it and plugged the bed into it. Inverter beeped but wouldn't put out power. Suspected a weak battery. Opened the housing and got two gell cells, again from my messy shop. All with a dying LED flashlight. None of the gell cells worked although new. Realized, and after ten years it's never been an issue, that this APC 250 Inverter WILL NOT power up again if turned off without AC power.

Took it to my Office, Powered up the larger APC 1000 Smart Inverter, running my PCs which can be repowered, and plugged in the 250 inverter to get it going. Took it upstairs running, and lowered the BED. EASY PEASY.

AND, if I didn't do the same thing with the bed the next morning, but as I was going out to restart the generator, the power came back on.

Oh, and the security system, went into low battery alarm that night as well as the Freezer Temp. NOT a good nights sleep!

I need to make a checklist.

It is nice to have UPS devices that can be shut down and repowered.

I have a Honda eu7000i gen set (fuel injected) which has seen use every year but not to power the house. About three weeks ago our power went out and I wheeled out the Honda and hooked it up to our new Reliance load center that has a generator or mains switch. I turned on every breaker in the house except for HVAC and the Honda was just loafing along. I'm betting the 30 amp genny might start and run one of the ACs.

Nice addition to your power options Fi. A healthy used PTO unit offers lots of watts vs. $, and a properly managed cache of diesel gives you a great buffer for a long outage .

Some of those 2200s are $100 Canadian off lately, so had a quick peak the other night at the Honda site. Several models of 2200 that at a glance looked pretty similar, with most capable of dual-sync operation...... need to have another look after a good night's sleep (very busy/long week.....). I do like the efficiency and weight of those units.

Asking about water Rob..... I'm always on the lookout for new/efficient pump technology...... how do you pump water during an extended outage ?

Somebody 1 year+ back (can't remember name......) made an extensive post about managing large quantities of diesel. Water has always been an issue, but even more so now with ULSD.

A couple of ounces of prevention .......
