ya, it could be just asking too much of unit. An electric oven might be sucking up 40 amps by itself. Agree a clamp on meter is only way to test. Could just be a weak breaker.

I have an electric stove that can pull 12kw (50 amps) so check your stove rating.

Google "circuit breaker trip curve" - Circuit breakers "should" pass the rated current indefinitely, but due to manufacturing tolerances and ambient temperature may be more or less. Could be a couple of hours if the current is close to the trip rating. The higher the current, the quicker it will trip.

Tested the generator just now, to see if I could replicate the problem Turned off the line power and generator fired up, and the automatic transfer switch transferred fine. So I put a load on the generator - electric stove with all 4 burners and oven on, and the electric dryer. No problem, but after about 10 minutes or so, the power went off but the generator stayed on. Have to go out to the generator and toggle the (70 amp) breaker to see if that was the problem. Maybe I used too much power and simply tripped the breaker (maybe when the fridge went on or something.)

... went outside and sure enough, the breaker was tripped. Toggled it off and then on again, and power to the house came on. Ran the dryer for a little while, no problem. So, I guess a stove with all burners and the oven on and the dryer is too much.

Amongst the tribe here, there are a number who have an impressive (running and well maintained too ) collection of large and PTO gens.

Even there, a sub-2kw suitcase one is often what gets used the most........ handles many portable tasks adequately, and you can sometimes throw it in a pickup or an ATV and be out/quick task addressed/and back before you get the big-gen loaded or pto'd and to the task.

One tool is way better than none, but having a few too chose from .

You might have lost a bit of sleep, but that's better than some of grs's customers........ thinking of the ones who wait till it's out of oil and/or the battery is blown up......

For "us" types, it's amazing how nagging one little LED can be.....

Speaking of ranges. Anyone know "exactly" how an old school range controls the heat of an electric burner? It's something I have always wondered and never bothered to find out.

Yeah that would be my next gen purchase. A small ish inverter type. Just enough to keep the furnace going overnight without drinking a ton of fuel. Would also be useful for remote power around the farm.
