Yes, any new generator tells you as such in its literature or sticker on the side of it.

ok, do they provide a grounding kit if it is a requirement?
I'm installing grounding rods this week for my electric fence, sure understand that, but for a small gen?
I bet 99 percent of them are not grounded. I've never seen a portable grounded or grounding rods marketed with it as an add on.
I plead ignorance no longer though.

Hey, Dave, did you get much freezing rain accumulation on the trees and such? And did the power go out up there today?

Windy, but knock wood, line-power was up 24/7.

Not so much freezing rain lately, just high volume of liquid H2O coming down. Some local flooding not far away, and washed out shoulders on long runs of sloping (direction of traffic) roads. One friend could only get his trucks out his lane, cars didn't have the clearance. It warmed up fast enough that if a culvert was frozen up or just restricted, water volume was high enough to overtop a lane, and washout gravel.....

Looks like when connected to a structure('s wiring) = must ground.

Truly portable use - depends on the generator.

I was looking at my 5250 & on the frame, behind the gen. portion, theres a big grounding lug attached to the frame ..
BIG square, metal, hollow"lug" w/ a screw that goes down thru it.. Its obviously for grounding "something"..
I wondered what that was for.. I thought "maybe" it was for welding purposes..?? say if, the gen was used for welding..
You lean sumpin' new every day..

.

I'm not one of those wizards, but I've talked with a few....... "adequate" grounding in absolute engineering terms can be a lot more work (establishing minimum "earthing") than you'd first suspect. Soil type and saline content, water table are some of the factors....

So.... could be just one rod, or a huge grid required.....

A big part of why I still hang out here...... recent one for me...... up nawth here, I'd never think of using pecan shells as driveway cover....

Actually, depends on the generator. Most whole house generators are not supposed to be connected to ground rods, and share ground with house system. Portables do not require grounding but it can be done. Most portables are gfci protected so it isnt required. My 6500 watt newer briggs doesnt even have a ground lug
