that might even be called risking a catastrophe by your homeowners insurer and they would say so sorry when it all burned...
they'll cover most stupid things but this is pretty bad.
It is... but it works. Don't get me wrong. I am not advocating here but it can be as simple as this.

a little off subject....but one needs to admire the homeowner at work on their own electrical system. this was a photo from another website. he needed 110...i guess this is one way to do it

Unless that is a left-handed philips screw, the wire is looped under it wrong.

^ Bad Electricity 101 joke......

Hard to fix stupid or lazy, and youtube can just add fuel to the fire - in this case, literally :fire:

Surviving through a major natural disaster - would I take a shortcut I normally wouldn't ? Quite possibly.

Would that shortcut be corrected to Code post-disaster ? Yes, unless I was incapacitated/dead.

But, most of the messed up wiring like that out there was no "emergency" field-fix,

ok..current generac generators do not have grounding lugs because frame and neutral are bonded and transfer switch does not switch neutral. older versions of generac generators did not have this jumper and thats why they were grounded.

some portable generators have ground lugs and some do not. also, some portable generators that are gfci protected will trip when hooked into a house that have neutral and ground combined on main panel. i hooked up a honda to a house manual transfer switch recently that would trip whenever i flipped on the generators main breaker even if no breakers on house panel were on. i called manufacturer and they told me to open side access on generators rotor and unbond neutral to ground jumper. that did it. im not even sure if you have to ground this generator if the jumper is removed or not, and neither did the tech on phone. this is truly a grey area. i would assume that the 4 wire feeder to house would effectively ground the generator seeing as its hooked into the house ground system....but im not sure.
Not supposed to have the ground and neutral is parallel as that runs load current through the ground system.

I try not to touch too many things that can kill me and I think this sure applies. Well to the poor guy who tapped that line and is now
excoriated by every online armchair mechanic. Who in this case are likely all right but I agree with Dave, if his premise held true, than do what you need to. Surviving through a major natural disaster - would I take a shortcut I normally wouldn't ?
Yes, if you didn't have the parts to do it the right way. Or your Mother's oxygen system wasn't about to fail in an hour or, or
Necessity is the Mother of invention. I'm just hoping that person who did that fairly neat though defective tap job understands he
really can die this way.

My Natural Gas 16kw Generac automatically exercises itself every other Saturday. I am loving it.

Yes this person is in the same class as the man that defeats the safety neutral switch on his tractor and gets some other person killed when they try to start it standing on the ground. The 3000 we recently purchased was rigged to start in gear but that has been addressed.

Our 'emergency' hacks need to reversed before we forget about them and mame or kill another person.

A good friend almost killed his wife after his death because he put gas in a YELLOW jug and the wife added it to the kerosene heater and blew up the house the next winter.

One of my fears is I will forget some of my hacks some day.

First of all, I wouldn't start ANY tractor without making SURE it's in neutral!!

Secondly, I sure as heck wouldn't grab a can of ANY color and not check to see what's in it BEFORE pouring something out of it!!

What ever happened to folks taking responsibility for there OWN actions!!!

Dang, I hate it, when folks always blame "someone else" for there OWN actions!!

BTW, many of my tractors don't even have a nuteral safety switch! and that's just the way I like it!
