Even non-3rd World (or California) grids will sometimes swing noticeably. Your comment reminded me of (brand escapes me...) pics people have posted of seemingly reliable compact LCD displays you can plug into a 120 outlet, to continuously display voltage.
I have DMMs and a newish ups that will display at the press of a button, but That ^ compact display in a commonly used part of the house seems like a great idea...... Not looking for X decimal place accuracy, just knowing what Normal Voltage "looks" like is a good reflex.....
