wonder how many gallons an hour that rig used. 5MW is probably a little bigger than "small".
Now that would be bragging rights in your back yard, assuming you had any yard left.[/QUOTE]

The safe rule of thumb for estimating fuel consumption is 5.5 gallons per hour per 100 kW. For most gensets it’s around 5.25 gal from about 30-80%

Known as a Jimmy, green leaker or a Converter (convert diesel fuel to noise) in the business.

They phased out all the two-strokes when emission laws came in. For automotive the two-strokes have been obsolete since the series 60 came out almost 30 years ago.

They aren’t very fuel efficient but in a generator application they pick up load better than anything else since they fire twice as often. They catch fire more than anything else too.

They are truly loud at full load.

I've got an old Two Stroke generator I put up years ago afraid if I wasn't around someone would use straight gas. Lightweight little guy

My favorite name for Detroits was Driptroits. It's what my boat mechanic affectionately called my 8V71TI's.

it's so windy out we've been expecting to lose power here, visiting my brother in VA today, but he has the monstrous gen out back, either a 50 or 70kw, total overkill for this house but he wanted everything to run at once. I'm just curious to hear it run... He has gas heat so I kind of scratch my head on this, but when your older brother is an attorney and therefore inherently smarter than you (;)) I have learned to keep my opinions to myself. One thing for sure, he isn't going to run out of juice.
And come to think about it, clocks are flashing so we must have lost power last night. I slept right through it.

We too were expecting high wind. Working on my other generator project in the garage where my main 7.5 Onan/Kubota lives. Had battery on charge. Thought I could restore power in seconds if it failed, which it did. Battery did not start genny. Almost dark out. My short heavy booster cables were not in sight. Found in another building. Two other batteries close by did not start genny either.

Thank god for my overhead flourescent Emergency light running off the alarm panel battery. Got out the Yanmar Air cooled 3.7 set. AMAZING! Walmart battery had not been charged since the summer and it started in a couple of seconds. so proceeded to ***-fik-see-ate (spell check of no use) the Cat and me. Couldn't open garage door jackshaft opener manually as it has helper springs.

Tried using a jump charger to get the other main generator going but that wasn't working for some reason. Found the cable for the Yanmar to plug into the transfer switch, had to go to the house to shut off heating (just realized I forgot the hot water heater) and got power back and opened the door. Cat bolted!

Plugged the jump starter into the nearest outlet and 7.5 Onan started immediatedly. Switched over to that and shut the Yanmar down. Ran for a couple of hours until power was restored.

Easy-Peasy!

I always had an issue starting that 7.5 if I didn't have 13 or so volts. The starter relay won't even click below a certain voltage. I have been meaning to change the controller for the last ten years but haven't yet. These put off things will ALWAYS bite you in the butt!

RoundTuIts..... I never have enough around, to get all my "priority" projects done that I want.

Nice that you have a few options to work with for power .

We had a bomb cyclone yesterday. Sustained winds in the 30 mph range. Gusts up to 50 or so. Since I maintained the generator properly no power outage. It flickered enough that some clocks were flashing but others were not.

I wish there were some good decent quality Emergency lights. If all else fails, it's always nice to have light and be able to see where you are going before you find your bearings. I bought one from China a short while ago, and it quit. Seems one of the battery leads had corroded off the battery pack. Shame. I thought I was on to something. I would have bought more for me, friends and family.

there are a lot of quality flashlights, what exactly are you looking for? and what exactly is your budget?

I just wanted some little unit with LED lights that one can plug into an outlet. And that comes on when the power fails. Having Double A cells would even be a bonus, but strangely I have seen nothing like that or even many small EL units on E-Bay.

I think I have a good idea of what stuff like that should cost, as I am always buying stuff from China. Much of the stuff you find is still poor quality and terribly overpriced.
