I ran one for years. Putting out about 8KW continuous, used about 5/8 gallon per hour.
Used less fuel than a modern portable putting out same power.

I'm pretty sure those DD powered gens of old would not pass current emissions laws.
and unless you put them in a truly sound engineered power house, my are they loud.
But they sure look like a cool piece of machinery.
Weren't they called Screaming Jimmys?

this was posted on Good Morning thread and the thought of listening to EMD engines thumping away gives me goosebumps.
Now that's an engine...listened to with great enjoyment on youtube videos. Turn up the subwoofer...
wouldn't we all have liked to have seen this:

One of my old projects, that involved time in CA and MI in Ron’s neighborhood, was a 5.1 MW generator system. It utilized 3 16 cylinder EMD Diesel engines, each 1.7 MW. These are train engines. Just a small backup generator system.

oops, our powerhouse seems to have been one-upped...

wonder how many gallons an hour that rig used. 5MW is probably a little bigger than "small".
Now that would be bragging rights in your back yard, assuming you had any yard left.

I was watching an indepth tour of one of the largest Diesel Locos made. Now at a museum. They never changed the crankcase oil. Only added a five gallon pail every thousand miles or so.

very interesting I recall that ice storm quite well we only got a small amount that year,
as I recall we only lost power for a few days.

Known as a Jimmy, green leaker or a Converter (convert diesel fuel to noise) in the business.

They phased out all the two-strokes when emission laws came in. For automotive the two-strokes have been obsolete since the series 60 came out almost 30 years ago.

They aren’t very fuel efficient but in a generator application they pick up load better than anything else since they fire twice as often. They catch fire more than anything else too.

They are truly loud at full load.
