My dad did the genealogy thing on our family back in the 1990’s (pre-Internet), going back to the early 1700’s before he hit a dead end. He found 13 different spellings for our last name. Irish/Scottish descent.

Our Medical Assistance started at age 20... very much in demand and has very good translation skills.

60 years ago people our age were complaining about long hair. 40 years before that it likely was something else...
From a personal viewpoint, piercings make me cringe, as I can just picture th getting caught on something out in the woods. When I was younger and was talking to a guy with piercings, all that I could think of was that if we ever got in a fight I knew where my first punch was going.
There is a store I used to frequent where one of the clerks has those enlarged loops in his lobes... heck of a nice guy though so who am I to complain. I just can't look at his ear loops or whatever they are called.
I stopped going there when they hired a 57 YO woman who I have dealt with in another nearby store, until she got fired.
Every generation has their "things" which make them different from the last. Yet I don't believe that human nature has changed since Eve met Adam.

Some try tattoo removal as they mature...
Breaks in the skin are entry points for infection... and depending on the material one can become allergic...
These days asking a coworker a personal question is not without risk.
Being today is Valentine's I gave out chocolate single rose to all the nurses and techs... females that is.
Small well received gestures can go a long way in the workplace... just tread carefully.

A couple of places I frequent have have attractive, young 20-someting girls working there with tattoos and or piercings, and I too have wondered why they do that to themselves.
I often wonder how they are viewed when going for a job interview. Even though they might be qualified for a position, if it's one in direct contact with customers, it might affect their business, depending on their clientele.
A lot of the young men are worse, tattoos all over and several piercings. After striking up a conversation with one fellow while waiting in line at a Wendy's a few years back, he admitted he had more money in his tattoos than he paid for his car.
The spools in the ear lobes gross me out.
I often wonder what kind of self mutilation/modification they will come up with next. I remember in one sci-fi novel I read, the fashion was to have tattoos that were active matrix displays and would display whatever the wearer wanted them to using an implanted computer.

The split tongue is the one that makes me cringe... just saying.
I think that takes a "special" kind of person. But hey, it's their choice to look weird.

We used to put nose rings on hogs to keep them from digging holes and man, how they would squeal.
I wonder if the kids squeal when they get theirs.
