My first car was a 1966 Red Dodge Charger purchased used in 1969,I was 19 at the time.Kind of nice the back seat would fold down flat and you could put your feet where the trunk was on a normal car>>>>>>

I can see that being very handy for a 19 year old.:D

I like Fastbacks. My brother had a 67 Mustang 2+2 Fastback that he took to the drive-in movies a lot.

My first vehicle was a 1969 Volkswagon beetle. I bought it in 1975 when I was 15 years old. I paid $65 for it and had to borrow my older brother's truck to tow it home. I worked on if for 2 days and got it running. It was an electrical problem.

I bought it to ride in the fields and hunt rabbits with it, but my parents offered to pay the insurance so that I could drive it on the road.

I drove it for a couple years until it started having engine problems. I ended up trading it to a guy I worked with, for an old double barrel 12 ga. LC Smith shotgun. I still have the shotgun, but I bet I have not shot a box of shells through it since I got it.

Mine was a 58' Mercury in 1966. Paid 125 for it. Could have got it for 100 with the original front seat but I opted to pay 25 for the buckets the seller had swapped in. I forget the model. It was an "uncool" four door with the push button slush box. However, if memory servers it had a 333 Y block in it and would see a hundred pretty quick.

Think about that for a moment. An eight year old car for a hundred or hundred and a quarter! Little different today.

Ah- just saw this thread. I was 16, too old to ride my bike to high school, too far to walk, so I needed a cheap car. My buddy's uncle said he was selling his 59' (this was 1962) VW Bug, for $500. I figured it would be cheap to run, bought it, and sold it about a year later for $900. Bought a 61' Karmen Ghia, drove that for a year, sold it for more than I paid, and bought an Austin Healy 3000. Now that was a car. Sold it for an Olds Delta 88 so I could bring my girlfriend back to college in the Midwest from her summer at home in Conn., which was stupid in so many ways. I was young and horny. You can always get a girlfriend, but a 62' Big Healy?, no so much. After the olds, I got a 65' Porsche 356C, and a new girlfriend/wife. Biggest ride was a 72' Ford F250 one ton Camper Special, with HD everything, including big split rim wheels. I could toss a 1000 lbs of steel plate in the back, and not even notice it. But, being the Midwest, it rusted out before it wore out.

I got the drivers permit at age 14 and there was no drivers ed. Drove a '54 ford, and 54 Belair and then a '57 Belair. These were cars my Dad provided as we helped him many hours on the farm.
First and only new car was a '65 GTO when I got out of National Guard active duty. Had ordered it about six months prior so it was a very long wait.

IF you asked me, my first car was a "here, you drive this one" 86' Yugo. I can go a blazing 65 mph, with the windows up, going downhill, with a tailwind.

My first moving violation was when I was 3 yo. Busted on my red trike riding smack dab on the double yellow line through town.

Cops "arrested" me, brought me to the station and walked past the desk sergeant (patrol supervisor). He noticed the little violator and inquired about the story to the patrolman who picked me up. He explained it all and being a father figure himself, was pretty upset about it and wanted to give a scolding to these "irresponsible" parents. (It was in the early 70's, where to be guilty of "child endangerment" was to let kids play with grenades, touch live wires 3 times on the same day, or ride on a skateboard behind a moving vehicle in excess of 35 mph.) anyway, the sergeant said he knows the parents and asked if he'd like a shot at the dad first. Boy, was he so eager when given the "ok".

Imagine his response when he said "Have a seat, you're looking at the father."

I received my drivers license at the age of 16 in 1958 through high school
drivers education, but didn't have my first car until 1961 after graduating
from Tech School and started my first full time job 'making big money
in electronics'! My first car was a used 1959 Fiat 1100 4dr. sedan with
4 speed shift on the column, nothing fancy but functional. All my future
cars/trucks were purchased new.

1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza two door club coupe w/4sp on the floor,
102 hp flat six. Loved that car, even with the leaky valve covers
which always results in oil residue on rear lower grill. :(

1966 Datsun 1600 roadster w/4sp on the floor. Fun car to drive but
throttle linkeage would freeze during snow storm, resulting in
a few anxious moments when approaching an exit at 70mph.
letting up on the gas pedal had no result.

1969 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S fastback. 340 cu in V8 w/4sp
on the floor, my first and only 'muscle car'.

1976 Chevrolet Scottsdale pickup w/4sp on the floor, 350 cu. in. V8,
2wd. 8 ft bed.

1986 Chevrolet Silverado pickup w/automatic on the column, 305 cu. in.
V8, 4wd, 8 ft bed.

2002 Dodge Dakota Sport club cab pickup w/automatic on the column,
3.9L V6, 6.5 ft. bed.

2014 Ford F150 Super Crew pickup w/6sp on the column, 3.5 L
eco-boost V6, 5.5 ft. bed. This was purchased new in 2015,
left over from previous year inventory.

Sorry guys, but no pictures. I wish that I did have some, especially of
the older ones prior to the pickup trucks.

That F150 would make a mighty nice first vehicle for your nephew. As for me, first vehicle was 1974 Chevrolet C10 on loan from my father til' he found a car for me to buy. A 1969 Chevelle SS 396 - paid $ 700.00 for it. That's right seven hundred - wish I'd still had it.
Oh boy... That SS 396... That could move, eh?

My first car was at 17 and I bought a 69 Grand Prix with a 428, his and hers trans. I was so broke I would put in 5 bucks in gas at a time. Would clean plugs instead of replacing them.
Heck yeah, clean the plug, mess with the points, and timing... Me I my buddies were tuning our cars every weekend!

I was 21 and my first car was a 1936 Austin Seven (British made car), purchased for twenty five pounds or about $45 then.

Very cool... I have cousins to your car... 1933 American Austin and 1938 Bantam...

I was 14 years & 9 months old when I had earned enough money to buy a car and pay for insurance. It was a 53 Chevy kind of like this one.

Those older Chevrolets would run forever until the owner got tired of them...

Driving a 53 car in 63 really dated a person... today... a 10 year old car is just broke in.

1971 Ford LTD. 400 cubic inches of 4 barreled road sled. It ran pretty well, and was a very clean straight car. The trunk of that car had more room than any car I have ever seen since. I think you could put about 5 dead guys in it. The fuel tank was vertical above the rear axle, and the trunk had a very deep well in it.

And still have room for the beers.

It is true today so many of my coworkers buy new cars for their kids... especially daughters.

Car of choice is a new Honda Civic...

Nephew is really excited about it... went out to the farm with it today... brother said they were not quite ready for it yet... making a spot in the tractor shed...

Some of those old LC Smith shotguns are worth a lot of money. You should have yours appraised.

I have looked in to this several times over the years, and mine is not one of the more valuable models.

I owned the '53 for about 2 years and traded it for a '63 chevy. About 6 months later the new owner of the '53 wrapped it around a tree. I was so mad at him for wrecking my car.

Great thread! My first car was a 1969 Cadillac in 1980 when I was 15. It had a 472 4 barrel and was so big we used it for many hunting trips with 4 or 5 guys.

I used to go 100 mph on bald tires without even thinking about it. Still hard to believe doing that.

My Dad traded an upright freezer for the car to a neighbor.

My 3rd car was a 59 Buick with all kinds of wings on it, with a 400 something V8 and 2 barrel carb.

Every day going to work 20 miles away I drove 5 guys, and everyday coincidentally there was this particular Mustang going to work at same town and leaving from our home town at the same time. I never knew him, and I think he had it in for me, but at the edge of town as soon as we saw each other we would start racing down the long stretches, carefully blowing through country stop signs, and no matter what I could do he always beat me to the place we worked by a mile or so. We must have made this race 50 times with always the same outcome and was embarrassing. Love those Mustangs tail lights.

Then one day me and my buddy went to an automobile junkyard after hours and I found an intake manifold with a 4 barrel carb. and slapped it on my car.

The next day we ran into the same Mustang and gave it a go. But this time he shot out of the hole and was ahead of me by a mile before I could start getting cranked up. After months of trying and with the foot on the floor the whole time I finally passed him about 10 miles down the road on a big long stretch cruising about 125 MPH. We ended up passing him on a small country bridge at top end.

After that I never saw the guy again, but I wanted to. Luckily I didn't because all my tires were bald, but when I was 18 bald tires didn't matter much as long as it got you there, fast.
