That F150 would make a mighty nice first vehicle for your nephew. As for me, first vehicle was 1974 Chevrolet C10 on loan from my father til' he found a car for me to buy. A 1969 Chevelle SS 396 - paid $ 700.00 for it. That's right seven hundred - wish I'd still had it.

At 15 I got a 1968 bronco, , after I rolled it on its side , my uncle had it painted red white and blue , it was 1975 and just in time for the bicentennial. At some point I put in a Shelby 302 engine. That think was a blast, have been looking on eBay for a replacement,

Never owned the original Bronco but have wanted one for several years. My wife wants one really, really bad. So, someday. :)

My Dad said I had to take Drivers Ed in high school and get my license that way before I could have a car. So that's what I did; got my drivers license as soon as I was 16 and he promptly bought me a 10 year old (1946) Chevy 2-door, vacuum shift with almost 100k miles on it. I think he paid $75 for it. Of course, Drivers Ed was a snap, since I'd been driving an aunt's 1947 Ford Coupe from the time I had to sit on pillows to see over the steering wheel and I could barely reach the pedals. Doesn't everyone have a favorite aunt?

Well,,, it was faded black and I rolled it in our hay field showing off to my buddy about how it would do donuts. No whiskey involved...... :ashamed:

While I had a drivers license at 16, I had to wait until I was 21 to have enough money to buy my first car, a 1971 Ford LTD. 400 cubic inches of 4 barreled road sled. It ran pretty well, and was a very clean straight car. I gave $1800 bucks for it. The trunk of that car had more room than any car I have ever seen since. I think you could put about 5 dead guys in it. The fuel tank was vertical above the rear axle, and the trunk had a very deep well in it.

20 years ago my eldest Son bought an Olds 98 2 dr hardtop. White with white leather interior. He bought it for the 455 Rocket. Before he removed the engine we cruised it. I always said you could have a 3 piece band in the trunk!!!! Worst part was it didn't have a posi-trac rear end so we had to swap out the right rear tire a LOT!!!! I'm talking 2 or 3 times on a Saturday afternoon....... :)

My first car was at 17 and I bought a 69 Grand Prix with a 428, his and hers trans. I was so broke I would put in 5 bucks in gas at a time. Would clean plugs instead of replacing them.

I think it was 1964 when I took my drivers Ed in Louisiana. Local Ford dealer furnished the car and the course was free. Almost everyone in the class had been driving pickups on the farm so the driving was a breeze. Learning all the laws and signs was the only hard part and even that wasn't bad. In Louisiana drivers license could be had at 15 with no restriction back then, might be different now.
I didn't get my first car till I was 18 and it was a 1965 Ford Galaxy 500 for $1000. I bought my first new car at 19, a Ford Torino GT with 351 Cleveland engine, man that thing would fly. I had to get my sister to co-sign the note for me because my parents wouldn't do it. I paid it off the next year which was great for my credit rating.
Things were much different back then when hardly anyone in our community got a car for their birthday when they got their license. My parents farmed (and most all my friends lived on a farm) and money was tight and what we had went to purchase farming stuff not cars or trucks for teenagers. All my kids had a car to drive when they got their license and so far so have my grandkids. Times change quickly.

Some of them old sleds would really light them up that's for sure. My 400 was fairly powerful, but swapped that car for a 74 T-bird with a 460. That thing was way overpowered for the chassis and handling qualities. You could get in trouble in a hurry. With it s stock c6 transmission it would shift into 3rd gear at 92 mph if you put your foot into it. At 125 it was just hitting the road every now and then.:D

During the Summer of '68 I worked at a local small town gas station on weekends. All the kids would come in and get $1.00 of gas. I had to record the transaction with stubby pencil on a ledger. I still distinctly remember it was 3.1 gallons for $1.00. If they were driving a pickup they got a .02 cents per gallon discount so pumped in $1.06 and charged them a dollar.

Summer of '69 I spent a month at my Aunt/Uncle's house in central Oklahoma. There was a gas war going on. Ethyl gasoline for .19 cents per gallon. Wooooo Hoooooo!!!!!

5 Bucks in a 428 pontiac with a 17 year old gear head did not last very long. I miss the interior of that car. Like sitting in a cockpit of an airplane.

Richard, that was actually in Marlow, OK, where I took Drivers Ed at 16 and got my first license. We then moved to Texas just before I turned 17. And Drivers Ed was free in Marlow with a new 1956 Ford 4-door sedan with brake and clutch pedals on the right side for the instructor. Of course years later in Texas I had to pay the school when our daughters took Drivers Ed, and then still more years later, the local school didn't even offer Drivers Ed, so I taught the course to our grandson.

We didn't have to pay for drivers Ed in Missouri. I remember our Drivers Ed car it was a 1969 Pontiac Catalina, and I was the first student to drive it. It was brand new and donated by a local Pontiac dealership.

My first car was a 1966 Red Dodge Charger purchased used in 1969,I was 19 at the time.Kind of nice the back seat would fold down flat and you could put your feet where the trunk was on a normal car>>>>>>
