I'm putting together the engine on my YM240 d (came to me in a box) and I've encountered another problem. The head bolts (studs). All 6 are the same size but it appears that the one in the intake should be much shorter. Is there a spacer missing or did someone put in the wrong stud. The hardened studs are M15X1.5. The one I need looks like it should be about 75mm long or a 60mm bolt would do. I have emailed Fredericks and Schaeffers and called Hoye. So far no luck. Now I'm looking for suggestions. Anyone out there have the short stud or bolt or know where to get one?

If you know the sizes you need.. Try to google them. I assume they are grade 8 ? If there is a specialty nut and bolt place near you, try them Fastenal is 1 that is located here

What does "no luck " mean? What happened when you called Hoye?

Hoye said they don't have the bolt or stud. Fredericks and Schaeffers have not replied yet. Fastenal said they do not have any 15 mm diameter bolts or studs. I don't have a parts breakdown so I have no part number or picture of the assembly.

Hoye doesn't show a part # for that head stud inside the manifold, but here's their parts diagram. Did you end up with a spare short stud that looks like this?

Also - note the left front stud is longer than the others, to leave threads above the nut. The support coming back from the radiator goes onto that extra height then is secured with a second nut.

Right now I have 6 studs that appear to be the same length. No short stud (part #5)

Any supply house, (McMaster-Carr), should have what you need.

Thanks Normnde, I checked McMaster Carr and they show no results for m15 x 1.5 size bolts or studs. Any other good ideas?

Are you sure of that size? I don't find any supply house that carries it.

Fredricks seems to lost some Part#. If you look at their website under Misc. I would think they would have it

I know. The studs are larger than 14mm and smaller than 16mm. We measured them at Fastenal and they were 15mm. They said they were probably made only for Yanmar.

As last resort you could take a long stud to a machine shop , have threads extended as necessary and cut to correct length.

I called Fredricks yesterday and they said they may have a used one. I'm waiting for them to call. I thought about cutting the long stud but have been told the steel is too hard. Cutting is no problem threading is the problem.

On second thought if there are no 15x1.5 mm studs there won't be any 15x1.5mm dies either. I'm surprised Hoye does not have used ones, given the abundance of YM240-YM2000's

If you don't hear anything check into using a Helicoil insert. It's worked for me before.

This cant be that hard and they have to be availible, they should be replaced when doing head work right? how then can hoye and Fredericks work on yanmars and not have a source of studs?

Or go over to the guy who sold it to you and donate a half day of labor to clean up his shop. The stud should be there somewhere. (and the long one for the radiator support).

Apparently they won't fit anything else.
