Hey Winston I am certain you cant use the 1 wire hot rod alt with a chg lite since the excite circuit is built into that ones regulator. The lite is the excite circuit in most others its a simple but lengthy explanation and not necessary here.

edit: not saying it wouldn't work just wont operate your chg lite not sure if that was clear or not probably not knowing my comm skilz? it sure would work to charge the battery though, you would just need to add a volt gage if you wanted verification it was charging. ;)

Any other alt could be used just wire the light (excite) circuit into (normally the #1 terminal) and wire the #2 terminal (battery volt sensing circuit) back into the big output terminal on the alt. Then the only wires are the lite wire (3 ohm load IE small light bulb in key on position) and the big wire going to the B+. I have a little nippondenso alt off a Toyota pickup ready to go on mine if I get around to it fwtw. hth

Size is of utmost importance here. Is the one you have as small as the hot rod? If so, do you have a part number for it?

Good question. I guess I haven't had them side by side to know which is smaller? but the application for mine is mid 90's 4Runner and pickup v6 its a very common alt.

ok here is some specs-part # 27060-65040, its 6" from ft edge of pulley to back plate, its 7 1/4" bolt to bolt center line, its 5" in diameter. seem to think its 80-100 amps but that is immaterial in this application. has a 3 wire plug in ign, sens, lite. and b+ of course.

Cardoc, I am going to attach a thread from another forum where a guy put one on a gt14. Maybe you can comment on what you see there. If I am understanding it right he says the charge light will work. I sure don't know and don't want to order something that won't work. I guess it is sort of long and you may not want to mess with it. I'm afraid the one you have will not fit in my compartment. Converting to GM Alternator - Net Tractor Talk

Gt14 actually has a thread on this forum but the one I attached has the pictures already showing.

You have to be registered to view the pictures. if it fits in a GT it will easily fit your 2002D. the GT/YM 14 has no room around or behind its pancake alternator, and i mean no room

Here is the related thread on this forum. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/yanmar/106525-installing-alternator-instead-generator-ym146.html I had actually placed an order right before Cardoc's response. I got back in touch with them and asked them to put it on hold but it may already be shipped. Guess I will find out something today. I could not find a phone number to call. I don't suppose it would be that expensive or difficult to install a voltmeter on the dash somewhere. Thoughts? Something like this work? In-Dash Voltmeter

I was thinking very hard about replacing my dynamo when I was adding extra lights. I ended up adding LED's so I kept the dynamo. I also installed some gauges winston and I have added some pictures. I also came across (I cannot remember who wrote this up) hand drawn schematic and picture of adding an alternator (datsun). It might help you.

That hand drawn schematic looks identical to what I have to go with.

To the original poster... alt model used will determine if the idiot lamp can be used or not, even if the alt is a 1-wire self exciter. I've installed MANY delco 10si and 12 SI alternators. Plenty of those were bought as 1-wire, self exciting vr modules. I've YET to see a case where i have not been able to pry out the plastic cover over the 1/2 terminals, loop 2 to the charge stud ( may not be needed on all modules ), and then run 1 to a charge light, then to switched power.

Idiot lamp always worked as advertised.

Not saying there are no vreg modules out there for them that won't do this.. just the ones I've installed on countless tractors have worked this way. PS.. even on the 1-wire alts that self excite... with an idiot lamp hooked up, I have not found one yet that would not excite at a low 400-450 rpm.. vs a higher rpm for self excite.. sometimes from 800-1200 rpm.. etc.

(not sure why I am being quoted here or what the point is humm...)

Ok let me get this straight-you are saying we go buy a specialty 1 wire (when 2 and 3 wire are the same price or less and even more plentiful) spend the time to tear it down, more than likely lose the warranty tearing the paper tag or security paint dab on a bolt head and then hope we dont switch the wrong wires frying the reg and eating that alt or buying a new regulator for it when that's all he needs now is a reg for his old dynamo?

Holy bench vice batman! (si alternators are way to big for this application anyway cs may be better and more expensive possibly but the import alts are better sized imho fwtw)
