YM169D, clutch

Hi guys, I'm new to the group and am very happy to have a place to go to with so many knowledgeable people. I have a problem I'm hoping you folks can help with. My YM 169D only has about 40 hours on the meter so it's like new. I parked it a couple months ago and went out to the barn today to use it but..I can't get it to go into gear when it's running, it just grinds. When I shut it off it slides into any gear just fine. I'm hoping this isn't a big deal since I'm not a mechanic.

Hello Terry,

If your tractor truly has only 40 hours then it should be a simple adjustment. The threaded rod under the foot deck and connected to the clutch pedal should be adjusted for 1/2"-3/4" of free play. Otherwise you may have surface rust on the flywheel and the clutch disk is stuck from setting in the engaged position.

You should have an inspection cover (or plug) on the bellhousing to remove and see what is actually happening.

Take it out of gear while shut off. Crank it up and let it run for 15 to 30 minutes and usually it will break loose.

First...anytime you park it for more than a day, block the clutch pedal down. It probably has a lever or some device to hold the pedal down.

Now----with the tractor running at very very low rpms, in low range, try to slip it into 2nd or 3rd gear. It will not like it, but it should go. When it engages, throttle up and run it around for 15-20 minutes. Purpose is to get the clutch and pplate warm. Now come to a stop by sliding it out of gear (this is easier than into gear) and shut it off. BLOCK the clutch pedal down and let it sit overnight. As it cools (contraction/expansion) it will usually break free. This is the least violent method I know. Others involve running into things and are not usually as effective.

Start it up in gear and drive it around with the clutch pedal depressed. Slam on the brakes a few times and it should break loose.

After reading this thread, I am thinking I should also be blocking my clutch down since some days I don't use it. I don't see anything on my tractor to do this with. Is it something I can buy?

I bungee cord a pedal down to the foot plate on one of my tractors... Seems to work fine. Also, since either the tractors are undercover, or in a shelter, I usually don't lock down unless I'm going to be away from it for a few weeks or so... but, I should probably be doing such anyway....

doublecheck if you have this feature. it should be there... either it'll look like a flat plate with slot for connecting or a roundish metal bit (not unlike a tube) to hook over the pedal..
