My recently purchased 1610d's thermostat reads touching the lefthand side of the cold mark when first started. After 30 minutes of heavy 6' finish mowing it reads touching the righthand side of the cold mark. Does the 1610d have a thermostat and could it either be stuck open or possibly could it have been removed? Is there a problem with running a diesel at that low of a temperature? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm pretty sure you don't have a thermostat. I've never seen one on the 3T75U engines. If the engine and radiator seem warm to the touch then I would suggest testing or replacing the sending unit.

Mark777, /thanks for the reply. Yes, it does get hot and when I cut the motor off I hear some gurgling sounds coming from the radiator. Where is the sending unit for the thermostat located on a 1610d? How do you test the sending unit? Thanks in advance for any help. Bob

jaybird,

The temp sender is threaded into the water pump base top. Remove the wire (with key switched to on) and ground to the engine block. If the light comes "ON" then the wiring and fuse are ok. If the engine is HOT and the light does not come ON when reconnected, then the sending unit is most probably bad.

I would check the belt tension and fan end-play. If you can rock the fan slightly (1/8") then the pump impeller is dragging internally and pump bearing is bad....time for replacement or rebuild. I have had three tractors that needed water pumps, two 1610D's and one 1601D and I believed if was from over tightening the fan belt. If everything checks out O.K. then it is the radiator (Gurgling) and needs to be flushed and checked by a shop plus a new double lip seal radiator cap. Good news is you can brush hog with a 1610 all day long in 90°+ heat and only reach slightly above normal temperatures. You do have to clean the pre-screen in front of the radiator regularly.

always let your engine idle slow for about 5 minutes after you work her.......This will cool her down.

Yesterday I ran the 1610d for about 5 minutes to warm up, used the 60 inch finish mower on some grass that was not very tall for about 20 minutes and shut her down. Carefully using a towel I opened the rad cap and inserted a meat thermometer. The coolant temp was 150 degrees, outside temp about 70 degrees, gauge reading just touching the cold mark. I either have a gauge or sending unit problem. Does the operating temp I am seeing look about right-150 degrees? I know that ideal operating temp for a diesel is 180=190 degrees. Thanks for any help. Bob

That sounds about right. I think the cold mark on a temp gauge is usually 140, and it doesn't move off the mark until hotter than 140. You don't have a problem. Mine runs about 150-160 and I like it that way.

Normde2001, Thanks for your qick reply. When your Yanmar is running at operating temp. 150-160 degrees, where on the temp gauge does the needle register? Mine is almost touching the cold mark.

My gauge stays about 1/2 way between the cold and 1/4 mark. It begins to rise when mowing heavy stuff, telling me I need to clean the radiator screen. There are no #'s on the gauge, but I believe cold is 140, 1/2 is 195, and hot is 250.

Thanks, Normde2001 for the reply. I am going to work my 1610d really hard this w/e to see if I can get the gauge off the cold mark. If not I guess a new sending unit is in store. Where would one get this item? From Hoye or Lens or from a parts house? How much are they? Thanks Bob
