I am new to tractors and am hoping someone can help me with troubleshooting the charging system. I believe the regulator is bad but they are expensive and I would like to know I'm right before buying one. I don't have any electrical drawings to help me. Any help would be appreciated.

Take the regulator to AutoZone. They will test if for you, if the clerk recognises what it is equivalent to.
Some of the 1970's 2 cylinder Yanmars used a Hitachi regulator that also was used on '72 Datsun (Nissan). The AutoZone clerk looks in a reference book and sets his tester for '72 Datsun to test that regulator.
Possibly Yanmar and Datsun continued to share common Hitachi components in later years and a match can be found for your regulator, so they can test it.

My 195d has been retrofitted with another alternator. I would recommend going this way. Just instal a 32 - 40 amp older stye G.M. alternator with internal regulator. Easy to hook up, inexpensive, and parts readily available. Also a used one from a Suzuki Samari '89 and up is a similar setup with a smaller bodied alternator.

Unplug the alternator, and with the engine running 1500+ rpm, you should read 20-30 volts AC from the alternator. Remember, the alternator puts out AC, not DC. If you get 20-30 volts, then the alternator is OK and it's most likely the regulator. Very common problem.

My 1700 also had a dead alternator on it. i found an early model hitatchi alternator estting on the shelf at the local mom-n-pop rebuilder store that had the same case size and used the same mounting scheme. All I had to do was have them swap the pulley.. I was able to use the same belt and all. That old alternator used an old chrysler voltage regulator. Worked great. Cheap for an old alternator and chrysler v-reg too.
