I have replaced that shaft with a new one since that picture was taken. The old shaft was a bit to short and when I tilled real deep it wanted to come apart on me. The yellow part you see in the picture is 1/2 of the protecive cover. If it was all there it would help keep you from getting wrapped up in the shaft should you have a momentary lapse in judgement and put you hand or arm near it. My new shaft has a protective cover on both ends.

RBEITZ where did you get your new shaft from for your tiller? I have the same problem when I am tilling my shaft likes to come apart.

Not to hijack this thread but does anyone know of a parts source for Yanmar tillers made in the USA. Mine is a 48"
model 1218, probably made by another maker. The serial number plate says made in the USA. My father bought it new, probably in the early 80s. I need new tines. It does not look at all like a gray tiller, more like a USA made job.

Sorry, to take so long to respond. I didn't see this post until today. I bought the new shaft from Buck at EFC.
