Tractor
Early model YM1700
The serial number on my tractor is 2TR1707014. Can someone tell when it was manufactured? Thanks.

That is actually your engine model number and serial number. The tractor model is a YM1700. Depending on your version, it was built in the mid to late 70's. Assuming the wheels are original equipment for that tractor, you can usually find a date code stamped into them. 4-76 would be April 1976, etc.

Hope this helps,
Aaron

You cannot determine the manufacturing date from a serial number.I have been reading about the supposed date stamped into a wheel for many years, but have never read of anyone actually seeing it.

Norm, my two YM186D's have Spring 1983 dates stamped in all the wheels. (5-83 for example). I think the manufacturing run was 1980 ~ 1985 so those numbers seem credible.

I agree Yanmar's chassis and engine numbers only define which upgrade level the tractor belongs to, nothing more.

Where do I look on the wheels for the date , it has been repainted ?
Thanks , Joe

The date is stamped into the steel on the outside part of the wheel as they were positioned on the axle from the factory. Look closely, and you will see it. There is no definite correlation between that date stamp and the date that the tractor was manufactured. However, it will give you an approximation. Who knows how long the wheels were sitting in inventory after being manufactured by the vendor. The only definite conclusion that can be drawn is that the tractor was manufactured AFTER the date stamped on the wheels (assuming that the wheels are original to your specific tractor). I have been told that Yanmar did not keep records to tie a serial number to date of manufacture. Sounds strange to me, but I can only go on what I have been told by those who have been directly involved with Yanmars for many years.

I think they have the information but won't share it. That lawsuit that preceded them going after the gray market importers cited the history of that specific tractor.

Just guessing but I think they de-emphasize model year, consider it irrelevant, then sell by model instead, so anything they have for sale is a 'current model'.

That current model theory is a good one California.

But to the wheel thing. Very few of these tractors here in america rolled out of a containor assembled. Just take up too much room that way. They take the wheels and fenders off and build a two tier structure in the containers and load them in and stuff the tires under them to cushion them and where ever else there is room. So when they get here there is no gaurentee that the tires that are put on a tractor actually came off that unit. And if your talking about VN tractors who knows where the rims and tires are from. Even a good Jap exporter possibly has tires just lined up and pulls so many rears and so many fronts to pack a container with..i bet there not particuar to pay attention to what tires are with what unit let alone the importer here who got them. SO i think the tire thing tells you nothing but the age of the rim.

And finally here's one in the wild. :)

This is a front wheel on the YM186D. All the wheels show 5-83.

All of my U.S. Yanmars have a similar date stamp on the wheel, but I take it with a grain of salt when trying to guess year of production. My opinion about the reconditioned tractors is that guessing the production date via the wheel stamp is like throwing darts in the dark.
