OK...I did something stupid...I left the key in my Yanmar...and my little boy "played with it". Needless to say, I have no key. What have you guys done to replace the cylinder? I have a YM1700. Thanks for the help

Go to your local JD dealer and purchase a key for a JD 850. You get 2 keys in a package for less than $5.

Ok, now I know what key I need...how do I get it cut? Will I have to have a locksmith come out?

It will be precut.

That is what I did with my YM 1700, its a perfect fit. The only difference is it says John Deere on it.

Precut is correct..........just go in and say......" I need a key for my 850".
You'll get 2 keys in a bag, fit perfectly.

Yanmar used 2 or 3 different key types on the 1700. If the JD key doesn't fit you can buy a cheap replacement switch at most auto parts stores for under $10.

I remembered a post about Yanmar keys, so I used the search box with the wording " yanmar keys" .
The 4'th post up from the bottom from Tractors4u has an attachment showing the keys.
As a side bonus...they happen to be actual size!

It is a thirty minute trip one way to the JD dealer from my place, so I just took the switch out of my 186D and took it with me. I got two keys for about $6.

Ok, now I feel pretty silly...tells you how much I know about tractors...I am thinking GM cars...you should see what it takes to get a key!! Thanks for all the help guys...I really appreciate it. Gary /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, you just learned a dirty little secret about tractors and equipment. Those keys just keep honest people honest and the kids from starting them. The keys have no real security.

Yes I remember the "Email Threads" about the Windchimes & such...how many do you need?
You ask... Which? The windchimes?, keys, or coffee cans? LOLaughs.
I've got coffee cans, windchimes, AOL coasters, which also work real well as targets!
I suppose, I should get around to getting 2 keys some day. They are each OEM from 1977+80.
