Yanmar produced a tractor with a one-cylider engine in it many moons ago. I found a picture of one a while back and now I can't find it again to save my life. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif The engine was mounted with the crankshaft in a transverse position and power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a belt drive. The design of the hood and grille makes it look like it came right straight out of an old episode of "Astro Boy". /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
