Yanmar 2000 will not start

This is an older Yanmar I purchased that was not running. I added a fuel filter (the fuel tank was connected directly to the injector pump), replaced the started solenoid, rebuilt the starter, replaced the ignition switch, and rebuilt the injectors. Now the tractor does a good job of trying to start but doesn't start.

So what do I try next? I bled both injectors. They both seemed to be getting small amounts of fuel. The tractor seems to have good compression because whenever you release the compression release the starter slows quickly.

I am an old farm boy use to Massey Ferguson, Ford, and David Brown diesels. These always started as long as they had good injectors, clean fuel, and compression.

is that fuel filter too restrictive for a gravity system?

How is the injector pump...shot maybe from years of trash being run through it?

Is your battery fully charged, maybe hook jumper cables to it or put your battery charger on starting volts?

But i think that fuel filter is too restrictive??

per the manual your throttle needs to be all the way back to wide open to start. It really dosent need to be there but i would in your case pull it all the way back and then try to start it. timing? has the injector pump been off?

Thanks for the response. The injector pump was rebuild before I bought it but with no filter it would have been immediately filled with crap from the bottom of the tank. The fact that it was rebuilt tells me it was off and the timing most likely is off. However I thought that once you bolted the rebuilt pump in place it was mechanically locked in time with the engine. I have a shop manual and will look at timing the pump. I have been pulling the throttle back. I was hoping to avoid having to do something with the injector pump!

Thanks for the response! I have a new fully charged battery so the engine spins fast with the compression release ofF. If I break the fuel line from the filter to the injector pump the fuel runs out as if the filter isn't there. You get a good solid stream of fuel. But your idea that the injector pump is damaged and isn't pushing enough fuel to the injectors is a good one I will have to check on.

If the injector pump has been off, I would suspect the timing is off. These yanmars time with shims behind the injector pump. If you have the manual ..follow the procedure for checking the timing...I've never seen a fuel filter like that on a yanmar

That Exhaust/Muffler Cap sure doesn't look like it's opening very much. May want to remove it or keep it open.Now that I look at it closer the smoke coming out were the Muffler connects kinda seems to point to a clogged up Exhaust!!

Remove the rear, (#1), injector and install upside-down on the banjo fitting and try it. You should get a healthy cone-shaped spray. If so, continue on with the timing test. Since you don't have correct bleed screws just crack the fitting into the pump and make sure no air is in line.

give it some fuel, just a capful or similar..no starter fluid!! into the air cleaner and see if it fires, does sound a bit like the timing could be off

NOw that you say the pump was off, i really think your timing is off. It dosent sound quite right.

Carey mine will puff out of the bottom of the muffler but i have no restrictions, its just when i get a heavy load or starting when it pushes a lot of smoke out at once.
