yanmar 187d

I bought one from my local Auto Electrician a few months ago. Trouble is I'm in Australia. Before I bought I did some research on the web and on Ebay. Trouble was, everything was in the US. Have a look, they're out there. Hoye Tractor is a good place to start, even if they haven't got it they might know what will fit.

Here you go. Try Yanmar part # 121450-77010 which is a Hitachi starter # S114-235A.

Here's a Google search. I see some of the vendors show it as 9-tooth, others 11-tooth, so I would do some extensive research to sort out flaky cross-references that go to almost-fit frustration makers.

I have no idea if the same starter was used for all years of YM186, or on other Yanmars. It might also appear on Yanmar Marine diesels but those vendors prices are high.

You might get lucky and discover that this Hitachi starter was also used by Nissan or somebody, which would mean there are cheap rebuilts at Autozone. Also an auto electric shop might look at it and recognize it takes a universal Hitachi overhaul parts kit, for an inexpensive overhaul ... if you're real lucky.

Thanks for the info, i just found a guy that might be able to fix the starter if not have to buy a new one. But another question i have a 187d theres a lever under the steering wheel there is a l shaped 1/4" rod it runs to the valve cover pan on top of the motor. Theres a return spring on it and you pull it. Theres like 3 hinges on it? Also does any body know how to turn on the glow plug? Last for the moment its a 3 speed power shift with a lever on the dash and on the right side by the seat theres a another lever with a tag on the fender that says 1-n-2-3 what is it for?

The 1/4" rod is your compression release. Pull that prior to turning the key to crank position. This holds open your valves allowing the engine to turn over freely. Hold it in that position while allowing the engine to turn over for a few seconds or until your oil light goes off. No more than 10 seconds per manual. When oil light goes off, push lever in and bang, she ought to be going. Saves wear and tear on starter and easier on bearings. The thermal start is activated by turning your key counter clockwise and holding, my manual says until light goes off, my light doesn't go off, so I hold it 10 seconds or so. Truth is, here in East Texas There are few times I even need this feature. You should see a little bottle reservoir located to the left of the rocker arm cover. A small hose goes from it down to a small electric heater/valve located on your intake manifold. That is your thermal start. I think the lever on the fender you reference is your pto speeds. #1 would be your standard 540rpm.

some will tell you a year they were made but from what i have read on here its impossible from what folks on here know to tell what year a tractor was built based on serial #s. Reason is that model year in japan back then was not as important as it is here, and no notes that those that know of were ever made.

How come you have all these tractors but know little about them, did you inherite them or just took a notion to buy them??

Winston i have a manual, i think maybe the IT shop manual or either that terrible potocopied thing they give you with a VN recon but i remember reading "DO NOT" hold thermostart for more than 10 seconds. So you are right on, and i also dont think it will cut off unless it breaks.

As for year model: Here is a dealer brochure showing Copyright 1986. That corresponds to what I have read on here, so far as I recall. Maybe someone else has better information.

What I remember reading here is: YM1510 (Japan) and its US twin YM186 were first sold in 1979-1980. The early ones had the shifter on the transmission tunnel. About 1983, on YM186, the shifter was moved to the dashboard. I don't know if YM1510 also had this upgrade or if they just dropped the model over there. Then in 1986 a major upgrade lengthened the wheelbase out to something more reasonable, both for a larger belly mower and so you could get off the tractor without needing a cheerleader kick to get your leg over the steering wheel. (There isn't enough room on the floorboard to rotate your left foot around to dismount like a bicycle or horse). They called this improved model YM187. It probably had some other improvements than just length.

And I think YM187 was sold clear through the end of the period when Yanmar sold in the US, about 1981??? To guess at the year of manufacture, estimate (roughly!) 10,000 tractors per year starting from 1986 and compare your serial number to that. I don't think there is any closer way to estimate it. Incidentally parts are ordered by serial number, not by year.

Does somebody have better information?
