I have a YM1700B. The alternator has gone bad. The alternator is a Hitachi LT115-52. My understanding is this is an externally regulated alternator. However, I can't seem to locate the voltage regulator. Can anyone shine some light on this? Where is the voltage regulator?

I replaced mine when I first got my 1700. I had charging problems. There are other post here concerning the voltage regulator, dig around some. You can get a voltage regulator and alternator at the auto parts store that works just fine for cheaper. I think its for a 72 Datsun, but check for the other post The plug is suppose to be an exact match, in my case it was not- so I cut the old plug off and spliced it on the new regulator. Worked like a champ. The alternator was an exact match.

Yep! here is a old pic. I came accross. I couldn't get a clear shot of it but you can see the corner of it. It's on the fire wall and my Work light is blocking most of it. Your Find it if it's still there. I "Doubt" you have the SS. I don't think I've heard of one going or bad. I'm sure there is but Rare. If you have a big chain auto parts test the Alt. mine was a 72Nissan 510. I also have both.Old and new Reg. The Prev. owner threw parts at it for me. I found the Bad wiring connection a few months after I bought it. After finding the bad connection with Curiousity I hooked the Old Reg. backup WahLa It's Good. :D

I appreciate the help guys. My alternator is definately bad, and a new one is on the way. I'm assuming the VR is good. It's still good to know where it's located. Finding info on these grey market tractors can turn into a full-time job.

Does anyone have a part number for Regulator on the 1700B?

Go to Autozone and get one for a 72 Datsun. Same thing. Under $20. The plug matches, but ignore mismatched wire colors.

Here's more proof of the regulator and connector comparing a Datsun 1200.

Take the Old Alternator with you and have them check it. Hate for you to cut up the Wiring Harness to find out you just had a bad connection some where. Or the alternator is bad. I found out I have both on mine. And the old style regulator still works fine. My Alt. light would start to flash random and after knowing everything was good I found the Loose connection on the back of the Fuse panel.

No need to cut any wires. The Wells regulator has the same plug as what you took out. It's a direct replacement just made from solid-state electronics in place of old school mechanical relays. Use one or more of the existing mounting holes. Done.

Yanmar simply went to Hitachi and sourced the same alternator/regulator combo that Hitachi sold to Datsun/Nissan. (Except for Datsun its a 30 amp alternator in the same enclosure; for Yanmar only 5 ? amps). I've run this replacement set since 2003 on the YM240 and it works like new - because it really is the same thing Yanmar specified in the first place.

Pro tip: if you want a 35 amp alternator spec 72 Datsun with Air Conditioning. I think that alternator is fatter and will need a longer belt and adjustment arm, but it used the same regulator. The 30 amp output of the basic model (Datsun without A/C) is plenty unless you have have added massive additional lighting for night snowplowing etc.

I agree with Carey's suggestion to take both the alternator and the regulator to Autozone where they will test them for free, before buying anything.
