mahindra 4500 2wd
a guy at work has one for sale supposedly with 400 hrs and a 4 foot shredder, runs good, no power steering no water pump for $1900 OBO. does anyone know when these were made? is this a good deal? i was thinking more like $900. its 16hp, any info would be appreciated, i might buy it, i need something small enough to move around.

Any Yanmar 4WD Diesel tractor, that runs well and has such low hours is worth much more than his asking price. If it checked out as a good unit I would jump on the deal. And if his best offer means even less, you'd be stealing the tractor :).

If it has a D after the model number, it is actually a 4wd, not a 2wd. I'd say at 1900 it's a good deal.

Unless there is something seriously wrong with the tractor, I'd grab it quick. That is a very good price for the tractor all by itself, especially if those are the true hours. As Roxy says, if it is a "D" model, it is 4WD. It is also a North American model, not a "grey market" model. These both add considerably to the value.

Not having a water pump or power steering is part of the beauty of these smaller Yanmars. If you keep the radiator and radiator screen clean, and run something between pure water and pure anti-freeze in the cooling system, it will run cool. If it doesn't have a loader, you won't need power steering.
But, being 4WD, a small loader would not be out of the question.

These machines are incredibly simple, they always start, they are easy to fix if they ever break, there's good parts availability, and they are tough, tough, tough.

All the 3-digit model numbers are US models execept some really old grays, maybe 1960's. If this tractor looks like 400 hours, has decals in English, and is not repainted then it is a US Yanmar.

And D in the model # means 4x4, on both US and Japanese models.

When you go see it, write down the model and serial # stamped on the transmission by the operator's left ankle.

Also the engine model and number. Look for a green builder's plate, probably near the starter on the lower left rear of the engine.

If it is a US version it is worth considerably more than $1900 with rotary mower, even with 2 wd. This would even be worth buying for resale. Parts are available from Yanmar-US through any franchised dealer and US Yanmars can be advertised on ebay, unlike the grays.

I would buy as many of those as I could for $1900; however, since he said "OBO", I would offer $1500, but be prepared to pay $1900. Even if it really is a 2wd and not really a 165D, (4wd), it's still a good deal, assuming good condition. Year built does not matter, (it's about 25 years old), and could have 400 or 1400 hours.

The YM165 sold new in 1981 ( 1st year ) for about $ 4900, YM165D $ 5400.
Last year was 1988 YM165 $ 5810 YM165D $ 6310.

P.S. Parts availability is still good.

ok i went to see it, it is a ym165, no "D", a little rusty, needs a new seat, no japanese writing, sounds rough but i was expecting that, good hydrolics, right brake dosnt seem to work, pto cover beat up but in general it looks and runs good. i have pictures but dont know how to srink them down post. he said he,ll take $1750, oh yeah the shredder needs welded in a couple places. the hour meter is around 400 hrs but i dont know if its been replaced, it also doubles as a tachometer and it does work.
