Tractor
1987
I would be interested in any comments regarding the 1987 Yanmar 165D tractor. I have the opportunity to buy one for $1,600 including a front loader, rotary mower, tiller and trailer. What should be looking for with regards to potential problems with a tractor this age, and are there any inherent issues with this model and its attachments.

Recently moved onto a property with 2 acres of field grass that needs to be cut 3-4 times a year. The tractor is probably more than I really need but for the price and the added attachments which I am sure I can find a use for, it seems like a great deal.

Yanmar is generally known as a solid, dependable tractor - good enough they are the basis for many John Deere models. Check the hour meter to get an idea how much use it's had. Compact tractors commonly see about fifty hours per year. I have a grey market Mitsubishi ten years older than that, still going fine. Parts are becoming a problem as it's a grey market tractor but they are still available. Do you have a belly mount mower in the package or a three point? Sixteen horsepower could be kind of limiting, like a four foot on the three point could be too much for that size tractor - certainly not five foot. How large is the tiller? Go to Hoye Tractor Parts website they have a chart of Yanmar prices. If it is in good condition I would
buy it in a heartbeat.

IMO, you'll pay THAT, just for a decent riding mower.!! Now throw in all the attachments at 500.-800.-1000.00 apiece & you can hardly lose.
Thats just my opinion.

We bought a YM165D new. It was damaged in a flood 5 years ago. We hope to rebuild it some day.
If you have questions, I have ALL of the literature on that maodel.
Frankly it is one of the nicest little tractors that Yanmar ever built. The 165 is the same as the YM155D, but with a number of upgrades - mostly to enhance dependability.....and the YM155D was already a dependable tractor.
In used but decent condition with roughly 1000/2000 hrs on the tractor, good tires, and a loader they bring around $4500 locally and sell pretty much immediately. A good used rotary mower is worth $400/500 locally.
I don't know the price of a tiller and trailer - I've never used either....but someday hope that we get our YM165D fixed up and then will try to find a tiller. rScotty

Just buy it before someone else does. Assuming the seller can demo that it runs and the loader lifts, you could resell that combo immediately for 3x as much. But you won't, you'll love it too much after you try it out.

Just do it.

That's not an orphan gray model, it's a US model that is still well supported so that's one less thing to worry about.

I really do not know much about the YM165 tractor. What I do know is they are workhorse just like the other yanmars—whether build for the US market ad the 165 was or imported as a gray market.
Yanmar built several models for JD 650, 750, 850 ..... some of these have some variations to such as a 855 and others.
All if these were just solid built tractors.
For parts needs you will need to do the Hoye tractor route or Fredrick’s route or other such supplier. Yanmar USA is all about the new models.

Now for the advice, if it runs and the loader works and the 3ph raises and lowers, buy it on the spot, it probably will not be there that afternoon at that price!

That is a steal! We typically spend more than that on non-running parts tractors. I can't see any way that you would lose on that deal unless it was in VERY bad shape (like drug out of the ocean or on fire). Worst case you can sell it to me and get your money back! :)

eBay = $4,800 4wd

Tractor House online trader site = $6,950 for a YM155D 4wd. Next model below the YM165D.

Yeah that is a steal, if it is in good running condition I wouldn't wait to long otherwise it will be gone before you make up your mind on it.

I am pretty sure that the 165D was made for the US market. I have been able to get parts for my 186D not that it has needed very many parts. Every time I use mine I think what a great little tractor it is

That's right. The YM165D is not grey market. It was made specifically for the US market. I bought mine new from the Yanmar dealer in Denver. At the time, what I really lusted after was the YM186D or YM187D which were just not affordable for us. Just a little more expensive because the YM187D had just come out. Both of those were much smoother 3 cylinder engines, power shift, and best of all they had optional power steering.

There were a huge number of compact tractors and dealers for same at the time - although that name "compact tractor" hadn't yet been invented.
Yanmar was way above the others in terms of quality, and one of the reasons was it was the only brand available with the bevel-gear drive 4wd front axle that is used by every brand today.

The quality came at a price; Yanmar was also the most expensive tractor for its size by quite a bit. That suited the company just fine because it was a giant company, privately owned rather than being a corporation, and tractors were only a tiny part of their product line.

Actually, parts have become so much EASIER with either of the Yanmar types. There are now good cross-reference materials out there and lookups on the web, that needing something doesn't take very long to find the info or the parts.

Out of all the gray market tractor brands, the Yanmar brand has the most extensive parts availability I seen. It's by far superior finding what you need over the Mitsubishi, Iseki, Hinomoto, and even the Kubota. The joint relationship of Yanmar and John Deere has actually helped too.

As the Yahoo Groups, Yanmar Tractor Owners Group has now moved to GroupsIO, content has been retained and is going thru a re-upload. In 2020 it should be a good resource once again as it had started in it prime years. Yahoo Groups has started to fade away. Thus, to preserve the 696Mb of hundreds of images, a few hundred Mb of data files and manuals, the excel databases and the message boards, the group has moved in a good way.

So, support for the Yanmar US models or the Gray Market would be maintained. Now, if only more of the tractors can be outfitted with ROPs, seat belts and PTO shields that are now available today.
