That's why we mentioned that you may have to adjust he mix to make up for real cold weather.. or park it in a heated area.. use a block heater.. or hamp a brooder lamp on the engine.. etc.

Some people run 2 coolant bottles.. a 'store' and a 'run' jug. When the tractor is stored .. or it will get super cold.. the 'run' coolant is drained, and the 'store' coolant is added. And is swapped before it is used.. etc.

Not too long to drain a rad thru the petcock... worth the hassle for a system that otherwise runs fine.

Yeah,,I guess your right,,,,wouldn't be that big of a deal to up the percentage in winter,,and you wouldn't think it would be so apt to overheat in winter,,,don't know,,just depends on winter,,,,,,but I never even thought about this till now,,and maybe others in northern type climates havn't either,,,,it would be a pain to have to run an anti freeze mixture,,that might freeze,,just so it didn't over heat,,,,depends on how much work you are doing in the winter with it,,,and like you said if you can keep it warm,,,thingy

Let's bring this thread back to the top and talk about my 1110. It too is running hot. It'll idle all day, but if I drop it into high gear and run wo for about 5 min, the temp light will come on. The radiator is clean inside and out. The engine is definitely producing large amounts of heat. The top of the radiator is too hot to touch and the bottom is cool. Suggestions?

Cord,

What are you doing while in high gear? Is it over heating while just riding around in high gear, mowing in high gear, or what? Just trying to understand what the tractor is doing.

Make sure all the air is out of the system, and no more than 30% anti-freeze. Some have had success with a product called Water-Wetter.

/ yanmar 1500 getting hot #26
How do you know the radiator is clean? Have you flow-tested it?

/ yanmar 1500 getting hot #27
Right now, I havn't tried to work with the tractor. It's just driving around. Running in high gear seems to put a pretty good load on the engine.

Right now I'm running straight water. When I got the tractor the anti-freeze was clear and new. The radiator is bright and shiney inside, so it's been cleaned recently. I currently have some radiator flush in it soaking. I'll drain the radiator again tonight and flush it a second time. I seriously doubt that I'll get any debris out of the radiator.

"The top of the radiator is too hot to touch and the bottom is cool."

That's a pretty good indication of a plugged radiator. (Why don't the hot and cold water mix?) I would try a backflush. Remove the upper radiator hose at the radiator, shove a garden hose into the radiator hose, seal with rags, turn on the water and see what comes out of the radiator opening.

I made a flushing device out of an old radiator cap. drilled a hole and got a fitting that I could screw into it and then attach to a garden hose. Works great for the tractor and the cars and truck.

That's not a backflush, though. A backflush flushes back through the block and up through the radiator, sending the debris back the direction it came in.

You are right, but I get the picture. I'll make a point of doing that tonight. Hopefully it's clogged and somebody else tried the same mechanic in a can crud that I'm trying.

Anyone ever use Calgonite dishwashing soap as a flush?

/ yanmar 1500 getting hot #33
Never used Calgonite, but SAAB said to use Shout when converting from extended life coolant to regular.

/ yanmar 1500 getting hot #34
Jackbax,

I wonder if Shout would work with Chevy too? I have a '96 pickup that uses Dexcool. There are horror stories out there about the old Dexcool eating up stuff. I think it is true because mine is starting to develope coolant leaks everywhere and have been told by a mechanic to change it out to regular antifreeze.

I removed the radiator last night after is steeped for a couple of days with the cleaner in it. The drained water was clear. I put the garden hose in the outlet and turned the water on full. The water came out the inlet very quickly with no signs of restriction. There was no color or signs of debris in the water-it was clear. I have a oversized garden hose so the radiator was flowing at least 15 gpm. I reinstalled the radiator and filled with straight water. Although it took a bit longer to over heat, flushing the radiator has not curred the problem. The engine definetly feels hot, so I'm thinking the sensor is reading correctly. Any more suggestions?

/ yanmar 1500 getting hot #36
It would seem to be either a water flow or an air flow issue. I assume that you have checked the fan belt tension to make sure the belt is not slipping and that the cooling fins of the radiator are not stopped up. The only other thing I can may be more serious such as oil pump not pumping sufficient pressure to properly lubricate engine.

/ yanmar 1500 getting hot #37
It is a simple and not very expensive job to put gauges on the engine. That would give you more accurate data about temperatures and oil pressure, which might help with your troubleshooting.

/ yanmar 1500 getting hot #38
I'm certain that it's not a airflow issue. The fins are all clear. I made sure of that last night when I had the radiator out. The fan is definetly pulling air. I had the hood open last night when I started it and was suprised by the air blast.

I'm going to add a temp gauge. Jegs has a mechanical one that can be installed right on the engine.

/ yanmar 1500 getting hot #39
Good idea on the gauges. I did that a couple months after buying my tractor. My temp light starting coming on after about 5 minutes of operation. I knew the tractor was not overheating. It is not difficult to do. Tractor runs about 90 degrees under heavy load wiht brush hog and cooler with box blade

I forgot we switched from a 1500 to an 1110 in the same thread). Does it have a waterpump? we may be talking about a whole different problem. If it has a pump, is it pumping? I would find out for sure about the waterpump and if not a waterpump problem, would do the backflush. It could still be a blockage in the block, (so to speak).
