The board can required a manual J just for replacement.

If it hasn't happen yet, you'll find they'll let that "go". If the inspections department sees the calculations and signs off on it and there is a issue (garbage in garbage out, they become liable because they signed off on it LMFAO

I'm not a state licensed HVAC contractor yet, will be working on getting that next spring. I am though universally certified EPA section 608 and have my 410A.

As far as getting a contractors license, here in Ohio to even apply to take the test an application has to be submitted to the board showing you have been in the trade at least 5 years and have worked on at least one job a year that required a permit, you have to show permit numbers and who's license you were working under, it's very strict here now.

It used to be anyone could have a license, they gave them out like candy at a parade....almost lol. Then fly by night guys were doing shotty work, equipment was being given an unfair rep etc, so they really cracked down on who they give licenses out to.

They have cracked down ? LOL. If you were here and performing work without a State HVAC contractor's license, and someone (anyone, even another contractor, supply house, etc) reported you, You would be screwed.
First, they would send you a cease and desist order, Next would be a warrant for your arrest

I said they made it harder than it used to be to obtain a state HVAC contractors license. All the work I have done has been for a company or under a contractor, I would like to be able to do my own jobs, here they will get you for even advertising on CL without a license. It's all how the prosecutor defines the law. They have unmarked vehicles that follow guys leaving supply houses (rumored) around here.

You say you do a lot of side work. How are you doing side work without a state license ?
If I hold the license, I can't allow anyone else to use my license.
Years ago I could have let anyone use my license to perform work.. Not any more.Now, You would have to be my employee ,and I would be responsible for all the work you do.

Only way to be able to sit for the State exam here is, You have to be able to prove you have worked in the HVAC field for a min of 2 yrs. (W2 forms where you worked) Or, have proof of 2 yrs at a state approved tech. school.. Having an EPA cert. isn't a requirement to sit for the exam
