X595 No fuel

Just changed the fuel filter on my tractor and now I can not get fuel. I have taken the fuel line off of the filter housing on the Input side and there is a little bit of fuel that pumps out but when it is hooked up to the filter housing No fuel comes out the output side. I even tried putting the old fuel filter back in, nothing! I've tried pushing the manual pump lever to get fuel, and still nothing!
Where do I go from here?

It has a mechanical fuel pump...it's not going to do anything when you turn the key on.

Alright I'm feeling like I'm starting to get some mixed advice. I thought these tractors have an in tank pump as well as a mechanical pump

I believe there is a fuel shutoff valve...might you have shut the valve to replace the filter - and forgot to open? My apologies - don't mean to offend.

That was one of the first things I checked, and double checked, and rechecked. It's not the shut off valve

I don't have any specific knowledge on this model, but sometimes fuel systems can get "air locked" for lack of a better term.

Does your filter canister have a vent that can be opened? If so, cycling your key should pump the fuel to the filter with the vent open.

If no vent (and perhaps no in the tank pump ??), try filling up the canister with fuel and then screwing it back on. Either way - the goal is to get fuel in sediment bowl / filter housing.

Problem solved! I first checked the fuze for the fuel pump, it was good so I decided I better check the pump itself.
Removed the rear wheels, seat, seat base, and the rear fender to get to the fuel pump.
Ran a power wire from the battery back to the fuel pump terminals, nothing.

My thought is the pump has maybe not been working for some time but as long as the fuel system was primed it was able to keep feeding itself fuel. But as soon as I introduced air to the fuel system there was no way for it to keep sucking fuel

I also tried filling the bowl to get it primed again, but no luck, also this fuel system does not have any bleeder screw. I did try cracking the injectors as I mentioned earlier but no help.

Keep this in mind: I know jack squat about your model.

It it does have both, like you said, there is a electric "lift/supply pump" in addition to a mechanical injection pump...

Hang with me...

Before you changed the filter, and introduced air into the system, the injection pump was both pushing and sucking fuel. The electric pump is not supplying enough fuel. (This was a common problem on the early 24 valve Dodge Cummins trucks. The in-tank pump would die but the truck would still run and as a result the injection pump would fail)
Check the electric pump to make sure it is pumping strong.

That's odd about the electric fuel pump. My x748 has a mechanical tranfer pump, and JD parts shows a mechanical one for the x595 also. What is the part number for the electric one, and where is it located?

I am going to check on my x749 this weekend to see what it has. I was trying to help with this in a pm last night and didn't know what the x595 used. I have only changed one fuel filter on my mower and didn't remember if it was auto bleed or not. Don't remember having any problems with it like you mentioned so it seems this is an auto bleed system with a bad electric pump. This might fix your's as well. Hope I didn't add to the confusion but may have.

I should add that my older 820 tractor had a mechanical pump with bleeders above the filters and a manual lever to pump out the air. The 110tlb, 4520 and all my trucks are auto bleed by turning the key to on.

Thanks, I would be curious as to what your x749 has on it. The x748 is auto bleed, but with a mechanical fuel pump, the only thing that bleeds it is the starter motor. It takes 5 or 6 episodes of cranking for 5 secs to get it running after a fuel filter change. Then 30 seconds or so of pretty rough running. Filling the bowl first would be nice, but it's pretty tight in there, so I would be spilling it all over.
It would be nice to have the hand priming pump like the 4x20's (which also have mechanical transfer pumps).

Well I jumped to conclusions last nite about there being an electric fuel pump as well as the mechanical pump. I removed what I thought was the cover for the fuel pump and all that was there was a sending unit.

Back to square one, I have no air bleeder screws a priming lever that best I can tell does absolutely nothing. The fuel system must be air locked.

So I came up with an idea to prime the fuel system, pressurizing the fuel tank to push fuel through the filter bowl, fuel lines, etc. I removed the fuel cap and set a funnel down on the fill hole, then I took a air gun and wrapped electrical tape on the end so it would fit tight in the bottom of the funnel. (Note the fuel return line has to be removed for this to work) I removed the fuel return line where it goes back into the tank only because I had the rear fender off already, otherwise you could just pull it off from the filter housing. Blow compressed air in the fuel tank and it fills up the fuel bowl and purges the air out of the lines. I cracked the injectors after I did this to get the last of the air out, tightened them up, turned the key and it fired right up.
Im sure there are better ways to prime the fuel system but this is one method and it does work.

Did you close the valve to the fuel filter body, BEFORE you removed the old filter? If you did not do that, it is one of the biggest reasons for air locking these fuel systems. If you close the valve first, then do your work, there is fuel all the way up to that valve, and no air. Once your new filter is on, simply open the valve and use the manual priming pump lever on the side of the engine. This is how I do it on my X740 and I have no problems.
