I strongly suspect that these sorts of things wouldn't exist if you couldn't ever tell anyone else about them
people don't ride the bussubmersible to the titanic for the private experience, they do it for bragging rights
i think the same of climbing Everest, though even with porters doing a ton of the work for you and supplemental oxygen, it's still a major physical task, but still doubt anyone would do it without being able to have it known by others

In part it's because we're a social species, we like to talk about our experiences, but there's a lot of narcissism in seeking out activities specifically to have something to talk about. I don't trim the trees on my property to make conversation, but it may come up in conversation; and when it does come up, I'm definitely not expecting adoration or to impress anyone with my tree-trimming prowess

I believe a lot of people here on this forum are in the upper percentage per annual income and savings vs the median average in the US.

That said...

Lets say you get paid a dollar for every second you work, that is $3,600 per hour.

A million dollars would require 12 days.

A billion dollars would require 31 years.

I believe everyone except the pilot of the Titan was a billionaire. I don't think a billionaire thinks in terms of what kind of machine they want to buy to do manual labor for themselves to save time, they just pay someone to do it for them

I've mentioned before that a long time ago I used to work at the local airport refueling private and commercial aircraft, among other duties. It's always fascinated me that people are willing to spend the amount of money that they spend on private aircraft. On Notre Dame home football game weekends, it's common to see around 200 aircraft of varying size show up for the day.

Also, it's pretty common to see someone fly their child in for school in August, pick them up for Thanksgiving and Christmas, take them on spring break, and pick them up in May. That's 5 round trips minimum (but probably 1 more on spring break unless the plane sits for a week). Let's say they fly 2 hours each way. That's 4 hours per 5 round trips, or 20 hours total.

Let's look at a Gulfstream G650 (pretty common sighting, but probably an extreme example).

They cost a bit over $8000 per hour to operate. 20 times $8000 = $160,000 to transport your kid back and forth to college for 1 year.

4 years of that = $640,000.

Not to mention, it burns around 400 gallons per hour, so they consumed around 8000 gallons of fuel in those 20 hours.

One more item... a gently used G650 costs around $60M today.

The used F3080 mower I bought from John Thomas on this forum years ago actually cost me more any any vehicle I ever bought "new" in my entire life.

One thing my father did teach me is sometimes the reason why you have things is because you save and don't spend money foolishly so you actually have money.

That said, to be a billionaire, there is 1000 million dollars in a billion. Think about that. We're not talking 500 or 600 million, but a 1000 million.

Ironically enough, when Steve Fossett went missing, it was reported that the state of Nevada spent over 1 million dollars looking for him (not including California that spent their money looking for him as well). Ironically enough apparently his wife spent a million dollars looking for him as well and refused to pay.

So we have at least 2 billionaires on the sub ride that went down. You decide do do something that could potentially cost millions to find you doing something stupid, you should be on the hook for at least a portion of the bill IMO.

And would be straight down from last contact. Exactly where the wreckage was found. And Cameron was furious with how the media framed the search as a rescue mission, giving false hope. The only bright light here, is that all the people on board would never have known anything, as the implosion atomized them in 3 mil-secs. Far faster than any sense can reach the brain. If forced in to a decision of a space flight or a deep dive, I'd pick the space flight.

Cameron said the 5 would have most likely known something was wrong before they perished.
