Poor JD didn't have a chance. Seems like a plow would be more effective.

The raw power of several things. The steamer is a bunch heavier, the hitch point was unequal, pulling the JD's rear tires up off of the ground. The JD was not in 4 wheel drive. This was a total show stunt.

Like it would have mattered if the rope was level and the JD was in 4wd.

Yeah, that old steamer is a big hunk of iron, and is "hooked" to the ground pretty well.

In a pulling contest, hp is irrelevant. A 1/2 hp motor properly geared to a heavy vehicle drivetrain will out pull a lighter vehicle every time. It won't pull very fast but it will out pull the lighter/less tractioned vehicle every time.

I'll buy 10 feet. I used to run a lugger scrap truck before I retired and when picking up a heavy scrap box, I could bring the front end off the ground 10 feet, no issue. Just had to be careful setting it down so you didn't break a spring.

Those steamers produce tons of toque, and it's all low end. They produce maximum toque when completely stalled.

The beauty of steam is the power increases with time as opposed to decreasing with internal combustion. That is why the JD was pulling the steamer first. Once the pressure came up the JD lost.

my father would say that they had enough horsepower and traction to pull anything that had 2 ends to it.

Ahhh, of course!!

I'm sure the hand of the Almighty had nothing to do with sending that dragline (earth altering machine) into the water, rendering it inoperable, and everything to do with getting it out and back into service.

Pretty cool seeing all those dump trucks hitched up, though.

They said the fleet of trucks weighed 2,400 tons. They must have left off a zero or two.
