My MIL (RIP) was in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service), the women's US Navy. She was recruited to be a "code-breaker", and was billeted to Washington, DC. Her cover story was that she was an "Aerographer's Mate" (weather forecaster).
