That was really cool, Bruce.
Looks like its now a small tourist attraction. I think I saw a doodlebug-looking tourist train there in one part.
Did the mine go bankrupt?
Stopped operations is 1931. Then started again in the early 40's and stopped for good in 1945. Michigan Tech has been using it for studies and tourist stuff for 50+ years now.

I ride my bike along the tracks of the Western Maryland RR and was recently rewarded with a look at the recently restored Baldwin 1309, H6 Class 2-6-6-2. It is the largest steam locomotive in regular scheduled service in the US.


I've been around steam locomotives all my life but this was by far the largest. The way the ground shook as it passed was amazing!

That is an incline* train the moves via gear and cogs. The grade it runs on is quite steep.

Cog Railroad...I've been on a couple and they're for steep inclines. My first was in Hong Kong going to the top of Mount Victoria.
They're fairly common in the mountain villages is Europe...
Closest one now is Mount Washington, in New Hampshire
