I own a Danuser D18P woodchipper (PTO driven) and no longer have the tractor. I would like to convert it to run with an engine. Would a 20HP gas engine have enough power? The manual for the D18P recommends PTO rating between 20 and 45 HP.

I don't know that chipper but a few rules of thumb:

1- The more horses the better! Chippers love power. I have a Woods 5000 PTO and it can pretty easily bog down my Kubota BX-2200.

2- I'd contact Danuser via the web or otherwise to see how such a conversion will work.

You are going to miss that tractor when you need to move it. Sure you don't want to consider another cheap tractor to run it? You can probably buy an old farm tractor for not that much more than what you will spend on a large engine refit.

Thanks for your advice. I'll contact Danuser even if they stopped making chippers, they should be able to give me the information. You may be right about the tractor. It's very convenient but I find mine is just too expensive (lots of repairs- JD 1050)
