My 240 seems to have a steering issue.

Are there supposed to be wheel turn limiters?
Now and then I run into a rough patch and the steering wheel virtually rips out of my hands and the inside turn tire goes to nearly 90 degrees.

Granted there is a lot of slop in the system and perhaps getting all that tightened up will help but it does seem odd that the wheels can even turn to such an angle.

Any ideas on what I can adjust to limit that angle?

As you can imagine with the wheel at 90 degrees the tractor just keeps on pushing forward and the tire doesnt turn much at that angle.
Frankly I'm surprised that the rubber has not come off the rim during those nasty excursions, and driving the tractor in the rough is like wrestling a grizzly bear in a salmon stream.

Are your rims reversed, valve stem on the inside?

Yes the rims are reversed with the stems on the inside. They are not the stock rims and look like larger diameter than the originals.

I see what you are getting at, I'll have to see if they will fit the correct way around.

There is also a lot of play in the axles and steering rod that goes between both axles. Tightening all that up will also help.
I'll be able to get a good look at it with the wheel off when I try putting them on the correct way.

Yes the rims are reversed with the stems on the inside.
If the centerline of each tread is way out beyond the centerline of its kingpin, that would account for dodging to one side when that side encounters an obstacle.

Also, we've seen posts here where YM240/YM2000 axles snapped off. Offset wheels increase the leverage that can cause this.

What do those steering stops look like, (YM2000B)? Am not near my tractor now, but in 16 years have never noticed them.

my steering knuckles will hit the axle when its steered all the way over and kind of gets some extra pressure from an obstacle. I try not to steer all the way over.

This is the info I have for a JD850,950,1050 and YM2500/YM2610 and it may be for other Yanmars about getting the steering tightened.

Sorry that the hi-res image sizes are a little large, but the scanner was not good for low-res files.

This steering problem is called 'toggling'. Goggle some fixes. Tie rod may be too short which pulls in the inside wheel too much. I doubt the steering gear is at fault because its more of a geometry problem than a slop problem, unless the slop in the kingpin axes.

Look up Ackermann steering.

Those references where handy.
I think I can eliminate the steering gear as it seems fine.

I think the problem is a combination of slop at the steering kingpin, my non-stock tires (Car Tires) mounted wrong way around(fill valve on the inside) and perhaps I need a bit of toe in set at the tie rod.

I'll need to try my wheels to see if they can mount the proper way around. If not I may see if I can find some compact spare type wheels and see if they could fit better.

Then some toe in and take a look at the kingpin to see if its got an issue.
