My Grandson and I have started the process of getting to the rear seal of the engine on the Long 460. We have the shop manual and are following the directions. I am not a mechanic ... he's 12 years old and may become the foreman of this project ....

Good luck. And I think it is great that your grandson is there to learn and help you out. One thing that I recommend is taking lots of pictures in case you forget where something goes.

dont forget to wedge the front axle with somthing so you disable the pivot action between the axle and the tractor. you probably already know this ,but you dealing with a lot of mass so slow and easy.lots of luck

since the tractor pivots at the middle of the front axle if you dont wedge it from both sides, when you splt the tractor if one side of the front end is heavier than the other, it might lean towards you and possibly fall off your jack stands. It seems like( or you would assume) that you are supporting front half at 3 points left tire, right tire, and jackstand where you just unbolted the rear half. but in reality you are ballanced on two points, the jackstand and the front pivot. did I explain that in a way that makes sense?

LOL enjoy working with your grandson, most of my best memories of my grandfather have grease, sweat, a few new cuss words and my first tastes of beer in them. If you have the patience he did, it will be a great experience. any Idea how much the tractor weighs? I am wondering what the best way to support the halves would be?

When I have to disassemble or disconnect some complicated stuff in ex on car engine I put a video camera on a tripod and take a movie of the process. Then if in doubt when putting the staff back together I look in the movie how it was taken appart.

Thanks Fireman. I too have great memories of working with my granddad, he was a carpenter, farmer. And a very patient man...as I am finding myself to be. My grandson was just coming out on weekends, then he got in some trouble at school and he has moved in here, enrolled in a new school. Daily chores, responsibility and a schedule ...when time permits we work on the tractor, his favorite. We also have "barn talk" !! He has been cautioned that it must stay at the barn ... G'ma may frown on barn talk in the house.

I'm not sure of the weight, I need to tractordata it ... here are my plans for the support. Besides the shims, wedges and jack stands, I have it parked directly under the steel I beam rafter of the shed, 12" beam on a 40x60 bolt together steel framed building. I plan to support the front with the jack stands as well as a chain and come along to the I-Beam. The rear with a floor jack. I think all will be well.

BTW ...when the bolts come out do they usually split fairly easy??

Yes we have been taking alot of picture's and I have him drawing diagrams and reading the shop manual ... Thats redneck homework!!!!!

I don't know on your brand/ model if there are dowel pins aligning everything together, to be safe you want to try and take the halves straight apart with out twisting too much. "Barn Talk" I like that one. what happens in the barn stays in the barn!! Good luck !! I will be interested to check back in on this thread, I am on vacation next week so it should be farther along if not complete by the time I get back to a computer.

That looks like quite a bit of wear on the pressure plate release fingers, you might want to look at the throwout bearing to make sure it isn't wiped out. If you have to replace the part, now is the time to do it.

+1 - I usually take digital images of the components as I disassemble, especially screws!

That wear might be normal but still check it.
Look at the fingers there are 2 sets of 3 that would make me think it is a 2 stage clutch?
