But a directory is a file in Unix.
Linux has made it easier for the non-computer guy to use Unix

I do, I do......

Recursively remove all traces of /bin/laden without asking any questions (forced removal). Asta la vista baby.....

On another note - my wife does merchanising for Microsoft and is preparing a bunch of stores for the XP release this Thursday. At Staples, MS and Staples have prepared a handy, dandy CD (Free mind you) which walks you through XP features. Very well prepared. Additionally, they've included a utitlity which scans your system and informs you of what you would need to upgrade, replace, or trash. It will be found close to the area where you reserve your release. Just ask.

So for those of you who wish more information, go grab one.

Terry

Thanks for all the responses, guys. You've really cleared this issue up.

Ahem ... actually you have, in a way. What I note in the collective responses is a clear sense of lack of direction or, perhaps, even confusion. I also sense an underlying tenor of dissatisfaction with various Windows things, either in some specific sense or in a general sense.

I have spent most of my free time over the last week trying to educate myself on the current computer scene by surfing various computer sites and forums. One thing seems clear about Windows: XP is the strategic direction and all new systems shipped after today will only have XP.

On CNET, based on thousands of user ratings, XP gets 48% thumbs up from users and 52% thumbs down. One of the operating systems gets 93% thumbs up. Anyone want to guess, without looking, which one it is?

What was the margin of error in that scientfic poll? Did they prevent ballot stuffing? Show me the survey.

Any MS OS user knows that Mac users are zealots -- and we MS users love to bash MS but we still buy MS.

What did the CNet reviewers think of the various OS's? Then think about availability of service/software and the price of same. MS is still the best game in town. And if you'd like to hear me bash them I could go on for hours.

CNET asks users of the product to click on Thumbs Up or Thumbs down. It then posts all the written evaluations of users who care to explain their votes.

Windows ME got 28% thumbs up. 2000 got 89% thumbs up. I dont know why any group of users would be more "zealous" than another, if what you mean is that they would lie when they vote thumbs up.

What is Red Hat, anyway?

BTW, I just checked that CNET "poll" -- on XP Home edition 53% thumbs up vrs 47% thumbs down -- 93 "votes" cast. XP Professional -- 63% thumbs up/37% down with 87 votes cast. Mac OS X 10.1 -- 93% thumbs up/7% thumbs down -- 1339 votes -- hmmm. Me thinks they doth attest too much.

I don't think they would lie -- I think they are happy with their choice -- and they are vocal in their happiness. Zeal. No doubt the Mac is a great choice for many users -- but MS is mainstream. I would not make my choice based on the thumbs up/thumbs down CNET user vote. But that is me.

Epinions is another site that follows a format similar to CNET. They ask users to click on Recommended or Not Recommended and then post their evaluations. Here are the Recommended percentages for some operating systems:

Window XP -- not reviewed yet
Windows 98 -- 55%
Windows ME -- 58%
Windows 98 (2d) -- 71%
Be OS -- 80%
Mac OS 9 -- 86%
Red Hat Linux -- 88%
SuSe Linux -- 89%
Windows 2000 -- 90%
Mac OS X (public beta) -- 92%
Mandrake Linux -- 93%
Sun Solaris -- 93%
Debar GNU -- 100%
Silicon Graphics IRIX -- 100%
Slackware Linux -- 100%

Is everyone a "zealot" except pre-2000 Windows users?

Zeal has nothing to do with percentages -- rather it has to do with the likelihood of being moved enough to respond at all. My remark about Mac zealots was a friendly Mac user/windows user jab. Don't get too bent out of shape by it.

Good luck with your new computer/os -- whatever your final choice is.

Geeks are always satisfied with something they can tinker with. Linux is a very fun tinker toy. Therefore, it must be a duck. I, personally, like Mandrake the best out of all operating systems. But you will never see it in my office, where I make my living, until it is the number 1 distributed and supported OS in the country. BAAA, I'm a sheep, and if everyone else jumped off a bridge, I would too. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

More on the CNET XP polls. There actually are polls on four different versions of XP, which is why Huck is posting different numbers. Here they all are with the number of participants in parentheses:

XP Professional (full version) -- 63% (89)
XP Professional (upgrade version) -- 62% (38)
XP Home (full) -- 48% (1805)
XP Home (upgrade) -- 52% (97)

As you can see, the full and upgrade ratings are very close to each other for both the Pro and Home versions.

I think one can conclude from the CNET and Epinion polls that Windows is the lowest rated operating system going, particularly for non-professionals, except (anomalously) for Windows 2000.

Talk about your anomalies. What is Microsoft Windows market share? It's what we love to hate. Go figure.

(by the way -- I could not find XP Home (full) on the CNET review pages. Found all the others -- but not that one.)

"Microsoft’s share of PC operating system sales has been above 90 percent every year for the last decade. For the last couple of years, its share has been above 95 percent. " -- Creating Competition in the Market for Operating Systems: A Structural Remedy for Microsoft

So Microsoft is a monopoly -- we don't have a lot of choice -- we're squeezed into picking Microsoft. It seems that could account for some resentment toward Microsoft. Clicking "Thumbs Down" on some web page might be a convenient way of reflecting that resentment. Still, the CNET reviews don't really show that resentment. For the number of Mac users weighing in there were relatively few Windows users based on market share. And many of the negative "reviews" I read were nothing more than rants about Microsoft (many of them were complaints that Microsoft copies the Mac.)

I think there may be a new "silent majority." Computer users who are not unhappy with their computers and are not so aware of the operating system itself that they would bother to answer a thumbs up/down survey.

Zealots. I tell you, those Mac users are a bunch of zealots!/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

You're close on a few things glennmac. But you are wrong about free will. We all have complete free will -- but we are pragmatic -- and pragmatism often imposes itself on our decision making process. I like to eat. I write programs for Windows. I don't have a loyalty to Microsoft. I have a fondness for food.

/ Windows--98, 2000, ME, XP??? #58
Glennmac, I think I pretty well understand most of what you're saying this time - which is stretch for a feller who knows no more about computers than I./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif The first IBM I bought (moving up from Radio Shack) came with OS/2 installed, but also came with a set of floppy disks to delete it and install Windows 3.1, which I did because everyone I knew at the time who could bail me out when I didn't understand something was using MS Windows.

Buck, ME is fine
For What? My Wife (admittedly nuts) loves it, and for her usage, has no problems with it. For my purposes, ME was a royal pain in the rump, and always a problem. Admittedly, big differance in ways of using, and programs used with. That is why I dropped back to 98SE...for my way of using/needs, it is much more stable for me.
For Glennmac, or most of the average users, ME would probably be ok also, even though it is NOT a stable platform.
