Windows 2000 Administrative Problem

   / Windows 2000 Administrative Problem #31
The Oscar machine should be setup to get DNS from Audrey he is using internet sharing.

The problem he is having is related to file and print sharing which if he was not doing he would not even need the Server service. the protocol ini file is possibly corrupt it needs to be recreated. It probably was corrupted on the last change that is related to downgrading Oscar from the Internet share PC/Stateline connector. Rewriting the Protocol Ini will happen when you make changes to the Network Configuration.

Uninstall at least file and print sharing and then reinstall it is the best shot. Seeing how the Pc can use the internet I would not change the DNS setting. Your network could be reconfigured to not use internet sharing but it appears the Satellite router is not doing DHCP so it would require a manual config. It is the default for the Router to do DHCP and you could have 2 on your network this could cause some problems but I do not see a problem related to that.

The error message about DNS is odd on Oscar. But it does not seem to be causing a problem. It could be that the networking between Oscar and Audrey (the DNS Server) is flaky and causing the error for DNS this would lead back to a possible corrupt Protocol Ini file.

<font color="purple"> Oscar used to be the direcway host </font>

The reason I asked is a suspicion that might be the problem with the Server service. The Server service tries to bind with a network adapter at boot up, so it can do its job. If the old Direcway software is there, it might be trying the Direcway USB network adapter first at boot, and then later tries your regular NIC when you start the service manually. Just a thought.

Hank

Actually I was under the impression it binds with a protocol but it does get fuzzy there. Again the INI file would be misconfigured if the service was trying to bind to a none existent NIC

Hank and John,
Thanks for dedicating so much brain power to my problem. In the great scheme of things, this is a minor problem but I'll fix it if I can.

NEWS FLASH ! !
Fedex has just dropped off my new Direway 6000 modem. This new modem is self hosting. It has its own processor and uses network connectivity. The old modem used USB connectivity. What does all this mean?
It means that I will be installing the new modem on Saturday and removing ICS from the Network adapter on Audrie. The new modem can feed directly into a network hub and won't need ICS. I will reconfigure the network adapter on Audrie and I will delete the network adapter on Oscar and start over fresh. The instructions from Direway are quite detailed as to how to configure the adapters, TCIP, DNS, and all that other stuff that I sort of muddle through. Hopefully, all will be well.

If all else fails, I will reformat Oscar and reload Windows 2000. Oscar is a bit quirky. It locks up a bit too often and flat out refuses to install Microsoft Office 2000 (and some other programs too). Oscar is a Pentium 2.4Ghz, 512mg Ram, 80Gb hard drive.

Do you have an option to reloading 2000? Are you willing to try?

We've banishing 2000 from our network because of various conflicts. In our case 98SE and XP share connectivity happily with each other, but add one 2000 and all goes to @#$%.

That's good news, Jerry. Getting the DirecWay software, as well as ICS, off your PCs will no doubt solve all your problems. BTW, where I work we have over 10,000 desktops running Windows2000, a few hundred running WindowsNT, plus 150 Windows2000 servers all in an Active Directory environment. No problems.

Same here, Mike, but on a smaller scale, and our desktops are a mix of 2000 and XP. A year ago they were all 2000. We were very gratified when we upgraded our desktops to 2000 and could leave Windows 9x behind.

Thankfully, we didn't have to deal with Windows98! Either NT or 2000. We were going to skip XP and wait for the next desktop, but since that was delayed, we'll be migrating to XP Pro. By 2Q04, all our desktops should be either 2000 Pro or XP Pro.

I was in charge of merging 2 networks, running different NOSs (Novell and Banyan) then converting from NT4 domain to AD. I attended all the classes the technicians did and also passed all the MCSE tests (NT) with them. Gave me a great appreciation of what the staff had to do, plus helped in making better decisions. Only one person was re-certified under Win2K. All of us will probably get re-certified for Windows2003 Server.

When I joined this company in 1995, our desktops were Windows 3.11 and servers were NT 3.51. We've followed the Microsoft upgrade path, with the servers always on NT and now 2000.

And you all will feel the same way when you introduce 2003 servers into your environment. Good ridance 200x.

-Merry Christmas!
